Rostov-on-Don is a port city and the administrative center of Rostov Oblast and the Southern Federal District of Russia. It lies on the Don River, 32 kilometers from the Sea of Azov.

The city was founded in the 18th century, Rostov has a great history, which dates back to earlier period of time. After the 14th century various people inhabited the steppe of the Don region. They were not satisfied with the social order of that time and didn't recognize the power of the landowners. They were runaway serfs. Time passed … these people turned into a united community and were called Cossacks.

In June 1996 Rostov Duma decided to adopt the variant of the coat-of-arms where the tower represents the St. Dimitry Rostovsky Fortress. The ancient Russian arms remind about the role Rostov played in the defense of Russian borders. The coat-of-arms is located now on the mayor's decoration, all other cases of its use are considered by the Duma. The Flag was approved by the Duma on September 20, 1864. At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries the home guard regiments, which defended the Southern borders of Russia, were formed under this flag. The Flag of Rostov is kept in the building of the City Municipality and protected by the glass case. Its length is 1370 mm and the width - 850 mm. The Flag is taken out of the building only on the Victory Day and City's Day by guard of honour The Emblem of the Don Army Region was established in July, 5 (18), 1878. The flag of the All Great Don Army was established in May, 1918 on the Circle of the Don Saving. It consists of three length-wise stripes of blue, yellow and red of equal width.

In Rostov there are four theatres: Gorky Drama Theatre, Musical Comedy, Puppet Show, Theatre of Young Spectators. The Gorky Theatre is surrounded by a large park named after the October Revolution. It is one of many parks and gardens which make Rostov a green town and where Rostovites like to walk on a nice sunny day.

During the Second World War Rostov-on-Don was occupied twice (1941 and 1942). The war cost Rostovites huge losses in life. That is why in the city there are a lot of monuments devoted to the war years and people who gave their lives for our peaceful life.

Nowadays Rostov-on-Don as many other cities and villages in Russia is undergone the process of economical changes. But we hope that in some years people will be able to overpass all the difficulties and Rostov-on-Don will occupy its place of one of the biggest industrial cities of Russia.
