SOME FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEMS OF FORMATION EVALUATION IN THE NORTH SEA Done by: Toremuratov E. Checked by: Ivakhnenko A. P.
Introduction In the North Sea accumulate the huge hydrocarbon reserves. Accumulations of oil and gas that have been discovered and are owned by Permian to Paleocene, also have been found in different horizons. Types of reservoir rocks : • clay complex sandstone; • Chalk; • complex carbonates.
The North Sea is a marginal sea of the Atlantic Ocean located between Great Britain, Scandinavia, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France. In the petroleum industry, the term "North Sea" often includes areas such as the Norwegian Sea and the area known as "West of Shetland", "the Atlantic Frontier" or "the Atlantic Margin" that is not geographically part of the North Sea.
Some fundamental problems of formation evaluation in the North Sea • 1. Resistivity measurement • 2. Hydrocarbon saturation • 3. Distinction of gas from oil by logging methods • 4. Chalky limestone evaluation
Resistivity measurement In the North Sea used resistivity logs: - Laterolog deep (LLD); - Induction Logging Tool (ILD); - Combination of both.
S w, Determination in North Shetlands Jurassic Sands • The Brent Formation, which includes the most important commercial hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Area, was deposited in a shallow marine/coastal plain environment. • Core analysis of the basal conglomerate is difficult
Distinction of Gas from Oil in North Shetlands Jurassic Sands • The Jurassic hydrocarbon reservoirs typically contain gas and condensate overlying black oil. • The compensated formation density log (FDC) and compensated neutron log (CNL) generally show some separation opposite the gascondensate zones.
Conclusion • Area of the North Sea has some problems with formation evaluation of reserves. For avoiding this problems, special improved logging tools and wireline logs are used, such as : resistivity tools : • induction logging tool ( ILT); • laterolog deep (LLD); • formation density tools; • compensated neutron logs.
