Solving the Inherent Problems with the Personal Computer “The Quest for Unified Management” Part I Presented by: Douglas A. Brown President / Chief Technology Office dbrown@dabcc. com
Agenda Origins of the Problem (Explain the way it is – Status qua) Management Problems Solution (Define a new way of thinking) ©Copyright 2005, DABCC, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
The Origins of the Problems
The Origins of the Problems I’m a huge believer in centralized management of – – The device The OS The applications User’s environment My ultimate goal is to make the endusers life easier through IT but NOT at the cost of additional IT pain and hard costs. ©Copyright 2005, DABCC, Inc. The Origins of the Problems A typical environment consists of: – – – – – Networks domain controllers mail servers database servers application servers file servers terminal servers workstations Printers Each have its own management overlay In today’s world we manage in silos, from the server down ©Copyright 2005, DABCC, Inc. The Origins of the Problems Shouldn’t the goal be: No matter what type of computer you give the end -user have the same experience? ©Copyright 2005, DABCC, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
The Origins of the Problems I like to create the analogy between this type of management philosophy and a TVs philosophy. Turn it on and there are the channels. I’ve been all over the world and the experience is the same – I don’t know nor do I need to know anything that is going on in the background as it does not pertain to my task as an end-user. – – Why can’t we compute this way too? ©Copyright 2005, DABCC, Inc. The Origins of the Problems To summarize: – – We have a problem supporting the end-user. We need a solution to tie the environment together, but one that does it by putting the end-user first ©Copyright 2005, DABCC, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
Management Solutions
Management Solutions In most organizations: End-users find themselves computing through numerous devices from many different locations – Their world consists of an office or cubicle that has a desktop computer and some of their applications are delivered through a Terminal Server, some are local to their desktop and some are web based. – When the end-user then leaves their workspace, they pickup a laptop and or compute from their home computer or a kiosk – All provide a similar but different experience ©Copyright 2005, DABCC, Inc. Management Solutions Administrators experience numerous problems: These problems are caused by numerous items such as – – – Windows profiles Numerous printers Changing the perfection of performance missing data security issues on one device that might affect another Etc… ©Copyright 2005, DABCC, Inc. Management Solutions Typical Solutions: Administrators implement numerous utilities and scripts to try to create as close to a unified experience as possible – This creates more overhead, higher costs and ultimately more of a static environment – Environment build is buried in the heads of a few administrators – ©Copyright 2005, DABCC, Inc. Management Solutions End-user still faces the same pain The company is left with higher costs due to the loss of productivity resulting from the lack of uniformity and increased time to market and overhead ©Copyright 2005, DABCC, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
Management Solutions To see how it affects the end-user, let’s look at a view of the end-users environments. Workstation end-users have access to: – – – Local applications Softricity Soft. Grid applications Citrix and TS applications This workstation also consists of numerous configuration settings: – – – mail profile Applications Printers local and remote drives database connections much, more ©Copyright 2005, DABCC, Inc. Management Solutions To see how it affects the end-user, let’s look at a view of the end-users environments. Citrix / Terminal Server end-users have access to: – – Softricity Soft. Grid applications Citrix and TS applications Each Citrix / Terminal Server has an additional level of configuration settings: – – – mail profile Applications Printers local and remote drives database connections much, more ©Copyright 2005, DABCC, Inc. Real Enterprise Solutions (RES)
Real Enterprise Solutions (RES) In my quest for a solution to these problems, I was introduced to a company by the name of Real Enterprise Solutions I was quick to realize that they were looking at the same problems as I am Their goal is to develop a solution to manage the end -users first which ultimately manages the rest of the environment seamlessly the way it needs to be I am excited about the paradigm they bring to the previous mentioned problems ©Copyright 2005, DABCC, Inc. Real Enterprise Solutions (RES) To see how it affects the end-user, let’s look at a view of the end-users environments. RES Power. Fuse end-users have access to: – – – Local applications Softricity Soft. Grid applications Citrix and TS applications RES Power. Fuse enabled devices centrally manages numerous configuration settings: – – – mail profile Applications Printers local and remote drives database connections much, more ©Copyright 2005, DABCC, Inc. Real Enterprise Solutions (RES) ©Copyright 2005, DABCC, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
Real Enterprise Solutions (RES) If we take a look at the administrator’s view of each of these environments, we can see all of the settings across all three types of possible deployment scenarios are identical Now this is what I call, Unified Management ©Copyright 2005, DABCC, Inc.
