Morgan discussed NASA's Curiosity rover mission with more than 100 students who attended his talk. As his presentation drew to a close, Morgan encouraged the students, "I hope you'll consider a career in science. Go forth, be smart and become a nerd. " The students responded with a hearty round of applause. There were about 2000 people in attendance including several troops of Boy Scouts. Miller taught a class entitled "Design a Lunar rover, " while Whisennand staffed the Civil Air Patrol booth. She also gave presentations on "Toys in Space" and "Orbits 101. Most families have no home computer or internet access so students gather at the city library after school to do their homework on the public systems. During the month of October, Keith talked with 165 students who stopped by his NASA display. Recently, members of the SMD community generously responded to a request for materials and programming to aid Keith in this project. “The children in this part of the country have very little to look forward to. Very few believe that they can go to college, and there is no work for them here. Solar System Ambassadors Program National Aeronautics and Space Administration Jet Propulsion Laboratory California Institute of Technology Tips for a Successful SSA Volunteer Experience… • Make sure everyone knows you’re a volunteer, not a NASA or JPL employee • Keep your contact information current: Email, snail mail and phone • Respond to email requests from the public • You don’t have to accept every request that comes in • Can refer requester to other nearby SSAs, etc • Contact us if you can’t find anyone else to handle the request • Contact us immediately if you receive a suspicious request • Collaboration with other SSAs or other NASA volunteer programs encouraged • You’re not expected to have an answer for every question • It’s okay to say you don’t know and that you’ll find out • Contact us with the question; We’ll find someone to answer • Give credit where credit is due • Additional presenters at events • Presentation material: complete or individual slides • Abide by SSA rules in your Ambassador role • Don’t promise what we can’t deliver • When in doubt, ask
