Smokefree Children’s Centres A whole organisation approach Andrea Dickens Deputy Director, Smokefree South West Lesley Thomas Public Health Programme Manager (Tobacco Control), Devon County Council A
Why this project? • The whole organisation approach is shown to work in schools and organisations, so by inference, should work in CC • There was a lack of quality brief advice training available for non-clinical staff • CC work with ‘targeted’ families so reach the target population for smoking cessation and the smokefree homes messages • Devon’s CC Alliance and Smokefree South West were keen to promote SF via CC A
Aims • To establish and maintain a smokefree site • To ensure all service users know the best way to quit smoking, when they are ready • To promote smokefree homes. A
What were the outputs? • • SF policy Children’s Centres adopt SF sites SF signage erected on CC sites Every opportunity is used by all staff to raise the issue of smoking with service users • Referrals are made directly to the Devon SSS by CC staff • CC staff are confident in requesting a smokefreeroom in client’s homes and do so A
