Reflection • Purpose of Knowledge Exchange (KE) is to Move Knowledge into Action • YHS 2009 KE: – Variety of activities (reports, fact sheets, presentations, press release, YHS video, symposiums etc. ) – Variety of audiences (government, schools, school divisions, HTN committees, parents, RHAs, national and international)
KE Impacts MB Case Study Lessons Learned: • Face to Face interactions increase understanding and uptake of data. • Linking with existing infrastructure, systems and partners can extend KE reach • Youth are important stakeholders but often overlooked
KE Impacts 4. Senior management buy-in is critical to increasing KE capacity 5. Sharing success stories motivate & inspire others to take action 6. Grants tied to data can encourage data use in planning
Next Steps • Developing YHS 2012 KE strategy & workplan • Objective: to support partners in building KE capacity • Need your help and input!

Youth Health Survey Working Group
Youth Health Survey Working Group Task Groups: • YHS Regional Implementation Team • Methods • Administration Survey • Knowledge Exchange
YHS Regional Implementation Team • Consists of RHA contacts who are responsible for YHS implementation • Collectively planning/coordinating components of survey, for example: – – – Survey content Survey printing Ethics Identifiers Parental notification & consent forms Report creation & production
Methods • Consists of broad representation from research, policy and practice • Based on results of Expert Groups developed & pilot tested the survey tool based • Methodology decisions – Census of grades 7 to 12 students province-wide – Possible sub-sample for direct measures (height, weight, step-count) if funding becomes available – Inclusion of identifiers is still being researched & tested
Administration Survey • New component for this cycle • Online survey of school administrators to obtain school environment data • Data will be used to help identify & analyze environmental factors that contribute to the health behaviors of Manitoba youth • Draft developed & will be pilot tested
Knowledge Exchange • Numerous activities – some examples: – YHS video release • Stories about how the data from the YHS has made an impact – Presentations at national conferences about case study findings & lessons learned – Partnering with Saskatchewan as they develop their YHS system
Knowledge Exchange • Future Plans – Working towards consistent reporting of the next YHS – Developing the 2012 YHS Report template with an external writer – Development of KE workplan – Identifying future opportunities
YHS Working Group • Oversees overall workplan for 2012 YHS • Avenue for communications between all Task Groups • Responsible for evaluation of project
Adult Risk Factor Surveillance Working Group
ARFS Working Group • Adult Risk Factor Surveillance Working Group • Includes 17 members from 15 different PPHL organizations • 10 RHAs, 2 NGO’s and 2 gov’t organizations are represented
ARFS Pilot Project • • • Will involve a sample of self-identified communities across MB Includes choosing methodologies, designing tools, data collection, analyzing results and disseminating findings Results will inform the development of an ongoing, province-wide system of adult risk factor surveillance & provide stakeholders with local level information
ARFS Pilot Project Over the past year, ARFS has been: 1. Recruiting pilot communities 2. Researching methodologies (PDA’s, technology) 3. Determining potential survey content areas
WARFS • • • In October, ARFS presented a poster at the World Alliance for Risk Factor Surveillance annual conference 7 group members were able to attend this international conference, held in Toronto Offered a chance to meet international experts in the field of RFS and share our MB experience
Share and Learn • In December, ARFS was invited to participate in the Healthy Together Now Share and Learn • Goal was to have participants provide input on info they would like to receive from the upcoming pilot project based on 11 possible content areas • Themes and feedback will be used to guide the development of the Adult Health Survey (AHS)
Moving Forward with ARFS Where do we go from here? 1. Continue to look for funding and resources 2. Develop Adult Health Survey tool 3. Finalize survey methodologies 4. Conduct the ARFS pilot

Moving Forward • YE CLASP ended Mar. 31, 2012 • Received small amount of KE Bridge Funding (April-Sept). • YE CLASP Renewal (Sept. 2012 -Oct. 2014) – Build and strengthen existing YE CLASP – Expanded partnerships (PHE Canada, SK, NS) • Exploring new CLASP opportunities (June 2013 -2016)
