Shopaholism Ф-т Клинической психологии студентка 1 курса Хомякова Анастасия
Do you love to shop? Many people do, and for most, it is simply an enjoyable hobby. However, for some the enjoyment goes beyond fun and into the realm of obsession. This is when you know you have a shopping addiction, although the signs can be hard to spot at first.
A shopping addict is also called a shopaholic. However, this is actually a very serious problem for thousands of people worldwide. The early signs of a shopping addiction are pretty subtle and there is a fine line between a person who likes to shop and a person who shops obsessively. The majority of shopaholics are women, although a few men are also afflicted with this problem.
A shopping addiction begins with compulsive buying of things that aren't necessary to the buyer, such as buying ice cream on sale, even though you already have two gallons in the freezer. The shopaholic is able to justify these purchases fairly easily.
As the shopping problem expands, the buyer begins to feel guilty for spending the money and will start to hide things that they buy. Eventually, a shopping problem can lead to more severe problems, including extreme debt or bankruptcy, shoplifting and stealing money from friends and family.
What Is A Shopaholic? Shopaholics are individuals who can't control their spending. For those people, buying something is like a spring tonic - it makes them feel great. Are you a shopaholic or know somebody that is? Shopaholic is a slang term for what psychiatrists and people in the medical field refer to as oniomania which means compulsive desire to shop or shopping addiction.
Well the truth is, buying something new - a new car, a new dress, a new home - makes us all feel great. The difference between an ordinary spender and a shopoholic is that for a shopoholic, one purchase leads to another and the thrill of buying often outweighs consideration for the consequences of overspending that follows.
What Causes People To Shop Excessively? Most of the time people are having this shopping problem because of another problem in their life. Shopping is something they do to escape from reality. When they are shopping they are happy or become excited. These emotions are only felt when shopping.
Signs Of The Over Active Shopper 1. If you buy things no matter what the cost is or you are letting your urges to shop come before your children, spouse, or other family members. 2. If all you can think about is shopping.
3. If shopping is keeping you from going to work. 4. If you are deciding between paying for a new pair of shoes or your rent. 5. If you often buy things you do not need or if you didn't mean to buy them. These are all signs that you or someone you know could be a shopaholic.
Compulsive shopping can ruin peoples lives. It can lead to financial problems like bankruptcy and debt, family conflicts or divorce, loss of selfesteem, depression, and stress. These out of control spending habits are linked to materialism, anxiety, and depression.
Help for the problem Doctors say that a shopping addiction can be controlled by undergoing counselling with a clinical psychologist. It usually requires a multifaceted approach; and there are no standard treatments.
