Who is Sherlock Holmes? Everyone knows that Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character created by Scottish author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock is famous London`s detective investigating different remarkable and mysterious cases. He is a very curious person. He had various talents.

Dr. Watson describes Sherlock in this way: • Knowledge of Botany – Variable. Well up in poisons. Knows nothing of practical gardening. • Knowledge of Chemistry – Profound. • Knowledge of Sensational Literature – Immense. He appears to know every detail of every horror perpetrated in the century. • Plays the violin well. • Is an expert singlestick player, boxer and swordsman. • Has a good practical knowledge of British law.

But in his lifework he was simply the best. In his investigations Holmes always uses the only method. This method is deductive reasoning that makes it possible to determine everything from insignificant details. "From a drop of water", he says, "a logician could infer the possibility of an Atlantic or a Niagara without having seen or heard of one or the other".

In "A Scandal in Bohemia" Holmes deduces that Watson had got very wet lately and that he had "a most clumsy and careless servant girl". When Watson asks how Holmes knows this, Holmes answers: “It is simplicity itself. . . Publications The first story about famous detective “A Study in Scarlet” was written by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887. The last digest “The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes” was published in 1927. Holmes was featured in a total of 56 short stories and four Doyle novels.

Although Conan Doyle considered stories about Sherlock were not important for him. In December 1893 Doyle had Holmes and Professor Moriarty apparently plunge to their deaths together down the Reichenbach Falls in the story “The Final Problem”. Public outcry, however, led him to bring the character back in 1901, in ”The Hound of the Baskervilles”, though this was set at a time before the Reichenbach incident. In 1903, Doyle published his first Holmes short story in ten years, “The Adventure of the Empty House”.

Nowadays Since that time stories about Sherlock have been popular. This character became a great inspiration for many people in the world. There a lot of new movies and TV series, which are based on exciting adventures of an outstanding detective.

Also there are many famous actors who performed the role of Holmes such as Benedict Cumberbatch, Igor Petrenko, Robert John Downey Jr. and Vasiliy Lyvanov.

Vasiliy Livanov, Russian actor, became an Honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire "for service to theatre and performing arts" on 20 February 2006 thanks to the role of Sherlock Holmes.

Conclusion Sherlock is a fictional character, but even now we are fond of him and like reading stories about this unusual, clever, talented and remarkable hero.
