FROM THE HISTORY • THE FOUNDER OF THE BRITISH POLICE IS SIR. ROBERT PEEL AND THE BRITISH POLICE OFFICER IS SOMETIMES CALLED THE “BOBBY” AFTER HIM. • AT 6 PM ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1829, THE FIRST CONSTABLES LONDON POLICE STEP UP PATROL SERVICE. AT THAT TIME, THE POLICE HEAD OFFICE WAS LOCATED AT NUMBER FOUR ON WHITEHALL, FIVE LOCAL OFFICES - IN CENTRAL LONDON. • AT THE TIME OF ITS INCEPTION, THE LONDON POLICE NUMBERED 895 CONSTABLES, 88 SERGEANTS, 20 INSPECTORS AND EIGHT SUPERINTENDENTS. AT THE SAME TIME, CIVILIAN POLICE PERSONNEL CONSISTED OF ONLY FIVE CLERKS AND DISTRICT ACTIVITIES COVERED ONLY THE CITY CENTER WITHIN A RADIUS OF 7 MILES.
• BRITAIN HAS NO NATIONAL POLICE FORCE, ALTHOUGH POLICE POLICY IS GOVERNED BY THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT'S HOME OFFICE. INSTEAD, THERE IS A SEPARATE POLICE FOR EACH OF 52 AREAS INTO WHICH THE COUNTRY IS DIVIDED. EACH HAS A POLICE AUTHORITY - A COMMITTEE OF LOCAL COUNTY COUNCILORS AND MAGISTRATES.
• THE MOST FAMOUS NAME CONNECTED WITH THE BRITISH POLICE IS SCOTLAND YARD. IT IS THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE LONDON POLICE FORCE. BESIDES DEALING WITH LOCAL POLICE MATTERS, THE LONDON POLICE HELP THE POLICE OF ENGLAND WALES WITH DIFFICULT CRIMES. THEY DO THIS AT THE REQUEST OF THE LOCAL POLICE.
The duties of the police are: • assisting at accidents • safeguarding public order • dealing with lost property • fighting crime and apprehending criminals. • EACH POLICE FORCE HAS ITS OWN CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DEPARTMENT (CID). MEMBERS OF CIDS ARE DETECTIVES, AND THEY DO NOT WEAR UNIFORM.
POLICE UNIFORMS IN THE UK • FORMAL UNIFORM COMPRISES AN OPEN-NECKED TUNIC AND TROUSERS OR SKIRT, WORN WITH A WHITE OR LIGHT BLUE SHIRT AND BLACK TIE. • OFFICERS OF THE RANK OF INSPECTOR AND ABOVE HAVE ALWAYS WORN WHITE SHIRTS, AND IN MANY FORCES SO HAVE FEMALE OFFICERS. IN SOME FORCES, FEMALE OFFICERS WEAR A BLACK AND WHITE CHECKED CRAVAT INSTEAD OF A TIE.
Officers of the rank of Sergeant and above wear rank badges on the epaulettes of their shirts, while Constables and Sergeants also wear "collar numbers" on them. Shoulder numbers in the Metropolitan Police are displayed on the shoulder of the tunic as are all rank insignia No. 1 dress is worn with black, polished shoes or boots. • MALE CONSTABLES AND SERGEANTS IN ENGLISH AND WELSH FORCES WEAR THE HIGH HELMET WITH THIS DRESS, WHEREAS THE PEAKED CAP IS WORN BY INSPECTORS AND ABOVE. IN SCOTLAND, ALL MALE OFFICERS NOW WEAR A PEAKED CAP. FEMALE OFFICERS OF ALL FORCES NOW WEAR BOWLER HATS. AT MORE FORMAL OCCASIONS, SUCH AS FUNERALS AND PARADES, WHITE GLOVES ARE WORN.
