Senior Conference Private meeting with student and parents during September & October We will cover: n Graduation requirements n Options other than college n Community colleges n Developing a college list n UC , CSU and other college applications n Testing, letters of rec and counselor letters

Community College n n n The California Community Colleges is comprised 114 colleges and enrolls more than 2. 1 million students Must be EITHER 18 years old or be a high school graduate Applications and registration are done in the spring. Tuition is currently $46 per credit plus fees Requires Math and English placement tests to enroll in these classes. NO SAT OR ACT needed 60 units are generally required to transfer from community college to a UC/CSU Most UC campuses offer a TAG (transfer admission guarantee) with a 3. 2 GPA and 60 completed general education units (no UCB, UCSD, UCLA)

Four Year Colleges: Testing n n ACT or SAT (new or old) is accepted at every college in the U. S “Superscore” means to take the highest score of each section and combine to get the highest score. The CSU system allows superscoring, the UC system does not December is the latest date allowed for the CSU and UC system. Some schools prefer earlier (Cal Poly) Fee waivers for both the ACT and SAT are available from Grace or Julie

Application workshops held in October Students must meet coursework (A-G List), GPA and testing (ACT or SAT) prerequisites A cumulative GPA of 2. 0 is required with qualifying SAT/ACT score. With a 3. 0 GPA any SAT or ACT score qualifies for admission No essay or short answers=simple data entry Application fee was $55 per school last year. Fee waivers available online within the application Qualifying Tam District students are automatic admits to SFSU and Sonoma State-but student MUST apply A mistake on an application could mean no admission

University of California www. universityofcalifornia. edu/admissions/ n n n n Application filing window is November 1 -November 30 but application is online August 1 st. Application and essay workshops held in October Students must meet coursework (A-G List), GPA and testing prerequisites (ACT or SAT) In addition to the standard ACT/SAT, two SAT Subject Tests are recommended Personal insight questions: Students must respond to 4 of the 8 questions. Each response is limited to a maximum of 350 words. Application fee is $70 per school Historically, all eligible students admitted to UC Mercedhowever students must apply Admission notifications begin in early spring

The Common Application www. commonapp. org Complete one application for over 740 schools n Application workshops in October n Request transcripts, letters of rec and counselor letters only ONCE for all schools. n However, students MUST send test scores to EACH college that require them n Complete supplements for specific colleges n Students pay application fee per school n

Common Errors q. Not answering the question or all of the question q. Not focusing enough on yourself q. Including too much description, clichés, or not using your word count effectively q Falling into prompt / question “traps” q. Not telling the truth

Letters of Recommendation n n Student must submit Letter of Rec packet (LOR) if letter is needed. Packet can be found on Naviance in the Document Library or on the Tamiscal Website under Support Service. College and Career Students must schedule a 45 minute LOR meeting with Grace Aviles when packet is complete. LOR is not required for UC, CSU and most out of state public colleges. It is required for Common Application. September 13 th deadline for Early Action and October 11 th for January deadliness.

College Season Etiquette n n n n This is an individualized process It is inappropriate to ask where someone is applying Ask qualifying questions It is okay to keep your list to yourself Be open-minded Try to let go of bias, judgment, and ego Treat others the way that you would want to be treated

Financial Aid!!! n n n Process starts October 1 st and FAFSA is starting point for all federal aid “Cost of Attendance” calculators are available on college websites (usually in financial aid section). Use these! Financial aid deadline for most CA public schools is March 2 but many private and out of state publics have an earlier deadline Workshops through 10, 000 Degrees to help students and parents complete FAFSA Aid is available for most certificate programs and community colleges, as well as four year schools

Keep it Organized n n Take placement tests early for community college Follow deadlines for colleges you apply to Follow the deadlines for LOR packet Keep a College Application Log of all school requirements, deadlines and submission dates. Include all your login names and passwords in ONE place! A copy of the log is in the Document Library in Naviance and on the Tamiscal website
