An ointment is an unctuous preparation of a soft consistence often mixed with some medicament used for application to the skin for medical purposes or as a cosmetic.
A salve is a thick adhesive ointment for local ailment used for healing, soothing or mollifying. Like aloe vera, a drawing salve is a salve used to help treat various minor skin problems such as sebaceous cysts, boils, ingrown toenails and splinters. It is sometimes known as Black Ointment, or Ichthyol Salve. The main ingredients are often ichthammol, phenyl alcohol, or arnica montana, and several familiar herbs such as echinacea or calendula
Liniment (or embrocation), from the Latin linere, to anoint, is a medicated topical preparation for application to the skin. Sometimes called balms, liniments are of a similar or lesser viscosity than lotions and are rubbed in to create friction, unlike lotions, ointments or creams. Liniments are typically sold to relieve pain and stiffness, such as from sore muscles or arthritis. These are typically formulated from alcohol, acetone, or similar quickly evaporating solvents and contain counterirritant aromatic chemical compounds such as methyl salicilate, benzoin resin, or capsaicin. A liniment is a preparation of a consistency thinner than an ointment applied to the skin with friction.
A suppository is a drug delivery system that is inserted into the rectum (rectal suppository), vagina (vaginal suppository) or urethra (urethral suppository), where it dissolves or melts and is absorbed into the blood stream. They are used to deliver both systemically and locally acting medications. Rectal suppositories are commonly used for: laxative purposes, with chemicals such as glycerin or bisacodyl treatment of hemorrhoids by delivering a moisturizer or vasoconstrictor delivery of many other systemically-acting medications, such as promethazine or aspirin
