Selling Timber from your Woodlot: From Tree to Mill Dan Baker, RPF Bauman Sawmill
• Boundaries • Tree Marking • Doing it Yourself • Value • What does a Well Managed Woodlot look like • EAB and Woodlot Management
Boundaries Dan: OK, great, I’ll start tree marking then. But before I start, how will I know when I get to the property boundary in your woodlot? Landowner: You’ll know it when you see it. Dad always said when you get back to the old well, that you’ve basically hit the property line. Dan: Uh huh…
Tree Marking • Typically 25 – 30% of trees are marked in one thinning/harvest • Marked trees are usually a variety of sizes • Pick the worst first • Wildlife values, spacing, aesthetics, extraction routes, etc. all are taken into consideration when marking • What is left is of more importance than what is taken • Trying to improve the potential value of the woodlot through tree marking
