Terms • Windows CE is a operating system. Can be used on all from mobile phones to desktop PC. • Pocket. PC is a small PC (size of a hand) running Windows CE operating system. • Pocket. PC has a touchscreen of 320 x 240 pixels, and use a pen for input. • PDA, Palmtop, and Handheld are other names for these small PC’s. 2

Windows CE history • Introduced 1996. • Windows CE version 3. 0 and the Pocket. PC hardware plattform released year 2000. • Windows CE 4. 2 released year 2003. • The Pocket. PC built of Windows CE, are also called Pocket. PC 2000/2002/2003. • Lately Windows CE are also available in some cellular phones. 3

Windows CE features • Modular realtime operating system. Smallest footprint around 1. 5 MB. • Support many CPUs: Mips, Arm & XScale, Power Pc, Intel x 86 (upto Pentium 4). • Extensive network support Bluetooth, WLan, Vo. IP, VPN. Servers: ftp, telnet and web. • Programming tools free. e. Medded Visual Tools 3. 0 edition 2002. (Basic or C++). Very simular to programming in Windows. 4

Pocket. PC • Price $200 -700 depending on features available. • Recommended Pocket. PCs: HP (Compaq) i. PAQ, Dell Axim, Toshiba E-series, Fujitsu-Siemens Look. • Memory/Hard Disk typical 64 MB. 5

Pocket. PC input/output • Always USB and Ir. DA (infrared serial port). Serial port usually available. • No parallell port • Always ethernet (network) through insert card. • Wireless network (WLAN) embedded in high end device, else option through insert card. • Bluetooth (wireless upto 20 m) becoming common. • Extra Hard disk, GPS, more ports through Compact Flash or SD card. 6

Pocket. PC pros & cons • Power consumtion is low. Running up to 10 hours with 1500 m. Ah batteri (~ 1 Watts). • Low cost compared to other embedded or mobile equipment. • Relativly easy to buy, major electronic stores sell them. • Connectors are small and fragile. Same with screen. • Will the Pocket. PC be available in 5 years? 7

Seislog. CE history • Seislog. CE was written in spring 2001. Mainly a porting of Seislog for Windows v 0. 9. 96 • Webserver for collecting data over network, and timebased recording added 2002. • 2003/2004: Support for digitizer Seis. AD 18 and SADC 16/18/20. 8

Seislog. CE features • Seismological data aq. system with continuous, event, and time based recording. • Does basically the same as Seislog for Windows. • Lack some digitizer support, 1 pps time stamping. • Add webserver for data transfer to desktop PC, and timebased recording. 9

Porting to Seislog. CE • • Study existing code for Seislog Windows Text converted from ASCII to Unicode Adapt graphical user interface. Windows CE API – a subset of Win 32 API – a couple of API’s has a new meaning in Windows CE. – some API also only exists for Windows CE • Find replacement for missing API functions. • Test the changes extensivly. • Keep in mind reduced memory and storage. 12

Where to go? • • Better remote control of Seislog. CE. Support for more digitizers. Take noise spectrum. Peterson noise curves. Test longtime durability, e. g. run as a permanent station. • Test on Pocket. PC with integrated phone. (Port to Pocket. PC phone edition). 13
