Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Bridgwater SEALING SOLUTIONS History
History SEALING SOLUTIONS In the Beginning there was: Mr Percy Wills
History SEALING SOLUTIONS In 1935 Percy Wills founded the company and called it Wills Pressure Filled Joint Company based in St Johns Street Bridgwater
History SEALING SOLUTIONS
History SEALING SOLUTIONS In 1938 a Professor Plunket who worked for Dupont discovered a new material called Polytetrafluoroethylene, more commonly known as PTFE or Teflon t Due to it’s many excellent properties PTFE began to be used widely in industry, Wills identified this as an opportunity and gradually moved into the processing and machining of this type of material t They specialised in bearings, backing rings, valve seats and seals t
History SEALING SOLUTIONS In 1958 the company moved to Colley Lane The building is still there and is known as Fothergill House
History SEALING SOLUTIONS Because Wills had a high proportion of PTFE being produced at the factory, they became of interest to a number of companies and eventually in 1968 they were purchased by a company based in Littleborough in Lancashire who were heavily into PTFE themslves. t The company was then renamed: Fothergill & Harvey t
History SEALING SOLUTIONS t In 1982 the Managing Director at that time was a Mr Barrie Gibbons who had moved down to Bridgwater from the company’s headquarters in Lancashire
History SEALING SOLUTIONS
History SEALING SOLUTIONS In 1982 the Managing Director at that time was a Mr Barrie Gibbons who had moved down to Bridgwater from the company’s headquarters in Lancashire t He persuaded his bosses that Bridgwater should have a new factory and in 1983 the company moved to a new purpose built factory at Dunball t
History SEALING SOLUTIONS In 1983 the company relocated to Dunball
History SEALING SOLUTIONS t t As the premises at Dunball were significantly bigger than Colley Lane other products within the group were moved there, primarily composite tube production of glass fibre & carbon fibre (flag pole at Enmore Golf Club) In 1985 the Fothergill & Harvey Group was taken over by Courtalds (same company as British Cellophane)
History SEALING SOLUTIONS
History SEALING SOLUTIONS t Courtalds main interest was in the composite side of the company and in 1989 they moved this part of the business up to Coventry and sold the remainder of the business to a Management Buyout. The company was then renamed as Wills Engineered Polymers
History SEALING SOLUTIONS Just over 3 years after the Buyout there was a further takeover this time by a German company called Busak & Shamban. This company specialised in the manufacture and sales of sealing solutions, primarily at the high performance end of the market t In 1999 Busak & Shamban (which was a privately owned company) sold out to the TI Group of companies t The following year the TI Group were swallowed up by the Smiths Group t
History SEALING SOLUTIONS t And finally in 2003 Smiths sold off part of their company (5000 employees) to a Swedish company called Trelleborg, and what was Wills Pressure Filled Joint Company has now become: Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Bridgwater (TSSB)
