LIFE IN THE 21 st CENTURY Gadget [ˈɡædʒɪt] – устройство, приспособление Urgent [ˈə: dʒənt] - срочный, безотлагательный Criminal [ˈkrɪmɪnl] - преступник
Maybe robots will do all the dangerous and dirty work for us and our daily life will become easier. They`ll sweep the floor, dust the furniture, wash the dishes and even cook! When everything is automated, we`ll be able to do more creative jobs.
We`ll be able to call our friends on a videophone and type up homework by talking to a small gadget that understands the human voice. Scientists will find solutions to our most urgent problems. Our cities will become cleaner, greener and safer. We`ll drive electric cars and live in houses with lots of plants and special aircleaning gadgets.
People will learn to live in peace and understand each other.
GREAT INVENTIONS OF THE PAST Principle [ˈprɪnsəpl] – правило, закон, принцип Petrol [ˈpetrəl] – бензиновый Engine [ˈendʒɪn] – двигатель Shrink [ʃrɪŋk] – сокращать, сближать Feasible [ˈfi: zəbl] - осуществимый
Due to inventions of the past we have a lot of things which help us to make our life easier. More over, we can`t imagine our life without them.
Telephone (1876)
Edinburghborn scientist Alexander Graham Bell patented his invention of the telephone in 1876. Alexander Graham Bell (1847 -1922)
The following year, the great American inventor Thomas Edison produced the first working telephone. Thomas Alva Edison (1847 -1931)
Soon telephones became very popular.

Computer th (20 Century)
Charles Babbage (1791 -1871) British mathematician Charles Babbage designed a form of computer in the mid-1830 s, but it was not until more than a century later than theory was put into practice.
Some inventions can be a disaster for people, for example, nuclear weapons.
Albert Einstein (1879 -1955) Albert Einstein was born in 1879 in a small German town. In 1905 he wrote an article in a science magazine. This was his “Special Theory of Relativity”, the basis of atomic energy. Later, Albert became a professor. After ten years of hard work he created “General Theory of Relativity”. In 1921 Einstein received the Nobel Prize for Physics. When Hitler came to power, Albert moved to the United States. Einstein died in 1955.
Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov (1921 -1989) Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov was born in 1921 into a family of teachers. When he was a student Sakharov began to work on the Soviet nuclear weapons programme and soon he suggested a totally new idea for a hydrogen bomb design. Sakharov is often called the father of the Soviet hydrogen bomb, but he became more known as a champion for human rights and freedom. Andrei Sakharov died in 1989.
In conclusion I`d like to say, that not all inventions are good for the people of our planet. Some of them can destroy and ruin our planet and life on it. We must remember about it.
