How can you help your child? Your child’s computer username and password needs to be learned. Please practise at home! Maths Passports – letters gone home today explaining different levels and things to practice at home – sample questions On completion of each level children awarded a certificate to bring home. Times tables – encourage your child to learn their 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables. (there are good songs etc. on You. Tube!) Read with your child for 10 minutes a day then discuss the book you’ve read together.
Homework • • • We are going ‘back to basics’ with homework this year. This means we will be focussing on basic skills to improve overall English and mathematics. Homework will be given out as and when deemed necessary by class teacher individually to children.
Reading books will be changed on a Monday and a Thursday and given out on a Tuesday and Friday. Your child should bring their book back as soon as it is read. If the book is not returned in time it will not be changed. Reading with your child When reading with your child you should ask your child questions about what they have read. This will help you to know if your child understands what they are reading. (e. g. How is that character feeling? How do you know? What do you think will happen next? )
Reading In school, we are focussing on reading and understanding of reading (comprehension). Discussion around reading books is a high priority. Incorporated in this is reading and dictating confidently in front of others. What can you do to help your child? Discuss their reading books with them at home in detail. Make reading an important time in your home, not just something that is done quickly because it has to be. This will encourage a love of reading in your child. Reading supports grammar and writing skills – so it’s worth putting the effort in!
Assessment without Levels We will be following the new curriculum for all subjects. The expectation is high, especially for English (including grammar) and Maths. We will give more information about the Year 2 statutory testing nearer the time. Children will be assessed in the same way as in Year 1: Y 2 E= Emerging – has achieved some of the outcomes Y 2 D = Developing – has achieved most of outcomes Y 2 S = Secure - has achieved end of year outcomes
