Key issues in building a global finance team • the obvious: – geographically dispersed – past the tipping point – coming from different places, cultures • perhaps less obvious: – new to everyone, although they may not realise it… – skillsets vary geographically, as does availability – silo-mentality inherited? – what does ‘great’ look like? – diversity – scale
How we have started to address issues: communication • Skype… • meetings, eg joint country director/finance director workshop on vision of finance • finance steering group and similar • 121 calls with members • RFD calls • visits • transition readiness, then floor-walking • having a project management approach • open plan
How we have started to address issues: other • recruitment (learnings & quality) • cascade of objectives from CEO • explicit on our vision • take tough decisions • celebrate successes • field trip awards and comms post-visit • re-addressing training – taking learnings • Strengthsfinder • capacity-building manager • demonstrating some early successes
Outputs from CD/FD workshop A number of technical actions agreed, but first part of workshop helped in: – increasing trust between parties – allowing people to see each other’s point of view and accepting different styles – opening communication channels. Much of this was achieved via the informal activities, such as describing finance as a fruit… It also helped me to make a key judgment/decision.
