Saratov State Medical University named after Razumovsky V. I.
History Saratov State Medical University named after Razumovsky V. I. (SSMU) was founded in 1909. It was first named as Saratov State University. In the later years it was broken up and renamed – Saratov State University named after Chernyshevsky N. G. (general) and Saratov Medical Institute.
At the 10th of June 1909 the ‘The law establishing the university in Saratov’ was signed – it was the 10th university within the one medical faculty in Russia. The act of ceremonial opening of the University took place at the 6th of December 1909.
Until 1917 the medical faculty was the only faculty in the university. The famous Kazan surgeon Razumovsky V. I. was appointed as the first rector. Construction of the first buildings of the university was started by a reputed architect Mufke K. L.
In 1930 the medical faculty separated from the structure of the university to become an independent medical university with three faculties - health-care, sanitation, maternity and child protection. By 1935 there were 1600 students studying there.
In 1994 the Saratov Medical Institute (the Order of the Red Banner of Labour) was reformed into a university, and now it is one of the greatest medical universities in Russia. Medics are trained by 8 faculties: medical, pediatric, dental, health-care, pharmaceutical, department for foreign students, faculty of special training and professional development, faculty of pre-university education, as well as the Institute of Nursing Education. Education at the University is held on state budget and cost-recovery basis. The cathedras are led by competent specialists, out of which there are 30 academics and corresponding members in social sciences of the Russian Academy and the international academies, 5 honored scientists of the Russian Federation, 3 honored workers of Higher School of Russia, 106 doctors in medical sciences and professors, 452 candidates of sciences, Russian 12 honored medics, 95 medalists in public health.
Leadership of the university is carried out by the Academic Council, chaired by the rector. At present, teaching is conducted in 75 cathedras where there are more then 4000 students, interns, ordinates and aspirants. In the 90 years that passed since the opening of the university, there had been 120 graduations and had been trained near 45000 specialists. The Saratov Medical University produces 600 high-qualified medics a year.
Saratov’s pride. Thereby, the Saratov Medical University is one of the oldest in Russia. The staff’s professional qualification is very high. Specialists produced by the university are on demand not only in Saratov and Russia, but also abroad. A great contribution in science was made by the university’s inventors. SSMU can be rightfully called Saratov’s pride.
