The Three Friendships l l The first tale is about the demise of Sam Mc. Gee from Tennessee while dog sledding in 1905 on the Dawson Trail in Yukon Canada. It is narrated by his best friend Cap later told the story to his bank manager in Whitehorse a Mr. Robert Service then published it as a poem that was read and loved my millions of Northern people who all know the sensation of Bitter Cold. I wrote the second parallel tale about the demise of Hong Bai Lan from Chang Bai Shan in China while working in a Wuhan steel mill. It is narrated by his best friend Yang Dong’s grandson , Yang Dong Xu told fragments of the story to me in the bar at the Chang Bai Shan Hotel in Jilin on a bitter cold December evening in 1985. I have refined the plot over the years. The third tale is for contrast. It is the antithesis of friendship and depicts a perennial fight between 2 great warriors and veterans of the Russia-Turk war of 1854. Trilogy Theme and Format l In Tale 1 and Tale 2, Both main characters sense their imminent demise and make final requests to their chums who unexpectedly find themselves under pressure to fulfill their vows. Both main characters have different concepts of death, paradise, and the most favorable conditions in which to enjoy the Great Beyond. Format: 1. Sam Mc. Gee is a 16 stanza poem edited from the original by Robert Service; and describes Sam’s demise on the Dawson Trail in 1905. l 2. Then, I wrote a short 15 stanza story about the demise of Hong Bai Lan in the Wuhan steel mills in China around 1920; l 3. Sam’s fur coat survives to this day. The lineage. l l l l Cap retrieved it from Sam Mc. Gee before he burrowed him in the hot coals inside the boiler of the “Alice May” on December 30, 1905 Cap gave the fur coat to his bank manager Robert Service a few weeks after telling Service the whole story. January 1906 Service gave it to his assistant bank manager at the Canadian Bank of Commerce before he left permanently the Yukon for France in 1910 The new manager kept it for 25 years and then deceased and gave it to his son who was a road engineer in northern British Columbia. Around 1935 The engineer eventually worked for one Phil Delaney a road contractor who build hundreds of service stations along the Alaska highway in the 1940’s. The engineer sold it to Phil Delaney in 1948 but no one can remember or recall the engineer’s name. Phil Delaney gave it to his son Hugh Delaney as a gift in 1980 before his death. Hugh had a successful career in broadcasting and meteorology in Western Canada and still lives in bountiful retirement in Calgary Alberta. The author, Denis Braun, won it from Hugh Delaney in a poker game in 1985 and has owned it ever since. (Delaney had a straight to the King. Braun had 4 Eights).

It is a tale of endurance and innovation by Cap in his quest to fulfill the promise he has made to his best friend. Cap narrates the events and later relayed them to his bank manager in Whitehorse …. one Mr. Robert Service drafted the story into a rhythmic poem that he published in 1907. Talk of your cold --- through the parka's fold It stabbed like a driven nail. If our eyes we'd close, then the lashes froze Until sometimes we couldn't see. It wasn't much fun, but the only one To whimper was Sam Mc. Gee. 4. And that very night as we lay packed tight Against the dogs beneath the snow, We all were fed, and the stars overhead Were dancing heel and toe, Sam turned to me, and "Cap", says he, "I'll cash in this trip, I guess, And if I do, I'm asking that you Won't refuse my last request. Tale #2 Hong Bai Lan Prologue l Hong Bai Lan from Chang Bai Shan is a parallel tale of friendship between 2 adventuresome Chinese from the North who escape the bitter cold of Winter for the sand beaches, palm trees, warm winds, evening breezes, and miniskirts in the South of China. l Fortune is followed by bankruptcy; and they end up toiling in the hot steel mills in Wuhan where Lan falls ill and makes a last request to his best friend Yang Dong. It is a tale of endurance and ingenuity in a quest to fulfill Lan’s dying request. Like Sam’ Mc. Gee, the tale is not about the main character or about death. It is a story of the endurance and perseverance of a best friend to comply with a last request. Two tales of two true friendships. l The moral: A promise made is a debt unpaid.

Excerpts: Tale #2. Hong Bai Lan from Chang Bai Shan l Hong Bai Lan from Chang Bai Shan is a 1910 parallel tale of friendship l 4. In Canton, the Western name for Guangzhou, they both quickly made small fortunes; Dong as an export trader in Kangxi porcelain; and Lan designing and building small house boats that plied the Pearl River. Both had a common friend and client …. a medical doctor and political activist who had just returned from Japan. His name? Sun Yat Sen. Lan built him a custom river craft, and Dong catered to his hobby of collecting Qing dynasty porcelain. Every month or two, Dr. Sun would cruise up to Guangzhou from his home in Xiangshan (later Zhongshan) and happy times would prevail as they ate, drank beer, and talked of their dreams for a new China. between 2 adventuresome Chinese from the North who escape the bitter cold of Winter for the sand beaches, palm trees, warm winds, evening breezes, and miniskirts in the South of China. It is a tale of endurance and ingenuity in a quest to fulfill Lan’s dying request. 11. Upon arrival in Harbin, Dong buys a horse cart; finds an ice factory; and buys 2 huge rectangular blocks of clear ice (clear ice is made from distilled water just as it is today to carve magnificent ice statues during the annual Harbin Ice Festival). Then he chisels out the core; sandwiches Lan between the two blocks; and wraps the entire ice coffin with layers of straw mats 25 15 March 2018 from the local wheat fields. l

l 13. He awakes at noon the next day trembling with fear and decides to return to the inlet to see if Lan has moved. To his surprise, he finds Lan floating in the middle of the river on a raft he has assembled from the straw mats. Incredible. There lays Lan merrily basking in the afternoon sunshine and drinking cold beer from an open 10 pack. l 14. Dong is horrified but Lan shouts to his pal that he is fine. : “Relax Dong, you see, it’s fine out here but I greatly fear you’ll bring heat and dust to my pool. Since I left Wuhan via Chang Bai Shan it’s the first time l have been cool. “ Thank you for honoring my last request Dong; and I hope I have the opportunity to return the favor in another life. Dong smiles and thanks Lan for his trust. True friendship blooms. 15. Lan’s raft then drifts slowly away into the twilight around a bend in the river and we see it approaching a derelict fishing boat in flames on the shoreline. On board, is a robust and enthusiastic Sam Mc. Gee waving to Lan. A friendship is about to begin in Paradise between two spirits. One spirit from China and the other from North America. We are witness to both a Beginning and an End as Dong returns to the village, in silence, to search for a small shop that sells scented tea; and to look for a new job. To Be Continued.

Each processes a latent desire for friendship but each is so ingrained with anger, hate, and revenge that true friendship simply never has a chance to surface. They cannot even agree on how to apologize to one another.
