Salesian works devastated by Haiti earthquake
The Salesian works for poor young people in Haiti have been seriously affected by the 12 January earthquake.
Don Bosco The Salesians of Don Bosco have been working to provide food, shelter and education to the poorest children and young people of Haiti for 85 years. Their work is a voice of hope in a country apart by violence and extreme poverty. A voice of hope for the young of Haiti
Before the earthquake there were 60 Salesians in 9 communities serving poor children and young people in Haiti. The Salesians operated six schools and mission centres providing education, vocational courses and technical training to enable young people to learn practical skills to gain employment. In many cases they also provided food, shelter and other basic living essentials.
NOW … almost everything is destroyed Fr Pierre Lephène in front of the ruins of the Salesian run “ENAM” (National School of Arts and Trades), where about 300 pupils were killed.

Damage to facilities The Haiti earthquake has practically destroyed all the Salesian works in Port-au-Prince • Provincial Headquarters • seriously damaged and uninhabitable • “Lakay”, the house for street-kids • destroyed • Training House of Salesian priests and brothers • seriously damaged – will need to be demolished
The Thorland Centre … is partially destroyed: the pavilion used for the welcoming and entertaining groups of young people has collapsed.

The Salesian school “ENAM” (National Institute of Arts and Trades) was totally destroyed with the loss of at least 300 students.

“Le Petites Ecoles” (“The Little Schools”) of Fr Bonhem have completely collapsed. They used to provide food and education for 20, 000 poor children and young people every day

Salesian International Relief Appeal Fr Pasqual Chavez, Rector Major of the Salesians has launched an international appeal calling on all members of the Salesian Family around the world to respond generously to provide urgent support to Don Bosco’s poor sons and daughters in Haiti. “ … in the name of Don Bosco, I make this plea on behalf of our poorest brothers and sisters!”
