Safeguarding and developing folk traditions: local vs. global context

IOV is a worldwide network of individuals and institutions working to preserve and protect all forms of folk art. It unites people from 150 countries. The credentials: 2010 - UNESCO accredits IOV as a Consultant to the Intergovernmental Committee for Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Folk art five categories: -Oral traditions and expressions including language; -Performing arts; -Social practices, rituals and festive events; -Knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe; -Traditional craftsmanship.
Mission: -to preserve, protect and promote all forms of folk art and folk culture; -to foster understanding and a appreciation of cultural diversity among all peoples.
The objectives: -Identify and research all forms of folk and a tradition arts including dance, music, rituals, food ways, traditional craftsmanship; -Increase awareness of the world’s rich and diverse cultures through folkloric festivals, classes, seminars, symposia, exhibits, etc. ; -Present folk art in live performances, exhibitions, workshops and other public events. -Create a supportive environment for the presentation of folk. -Encourage intercultural dialogue.
