Ann Craft Trust – ACTing against abuse • Established in 1992, and part of the University of Nottingham, the Ann Craft Trust (ACT) is a national charity. • ACT works with staff in the statutory, independent and voluntary sectors in the interests of disabled children and adults who may be at risk of abuse.

Safeguarding Children in Sport • NSPCC Child Protection in Sport Unit – founded in 2001 • Sport Safeguarding Partnership – strategic group addressing safeguarding children in sport • Unicef - International Safeguards for Children in Sport launched 2014

What about safeguarding adults? • Safeguarding Adults in Sport Steering Group was founded in 2008 • Representatives from across elite and grassroots sport including National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and County Sport Partnerships (CSPs) • ACT provides safeguarding advice

Safeguarding Adults in Sport Steering Group • Vision: Sport and recreation is an open, inclusive and safe environment for adults at risk • Mission: To embed the concept of safeguarding adults at risk in all sport and recreation organisations, so they have the tools, guidance and expertise to safeguard adults in sport and recreation.

Impact of the Care Act • Care Act 2014 - placed safeguarding adults onto a statutory footing • Six key safeguarding adults principles including Partnership • 2015 Sport England funded ACT for an 18 month post of Safeguarding Adults in Sport Manager

Sporting Future: A New Strategy for an Active Nation • ‘A strategy that encourages everyone to be more active, to prioritise physical activity in their busy lives, to volunteer in sport and help play their part in driving the sporting economy should also set out how they will be looked after and protected’ • This comes with a ‘Duty of Care’ • Need to ensure ‘Safeguarding for children and people in a vulnerable situation’ HM Government December 2015

Safeguarding adults at risk in sport • Review and develop services in relation to adults at risk in sport • Identify, plan and implement new initiatives in line with current practice. • Develop and deliver a training strategy • Offer advice and information to sport and recreation organisations • Represent the sector at key consultations nationally.
