I trudged out of my house dragging my huge suitcase behind me. Worries spinning round in my head making me feel dizzy. After 6 attempts I managed to get my suitcase out the door and into the car. As the car drove away I waved goodbye to my house, my big sister who was sick that day and my lovely trampoline. The year 6’s from Reignier School were going to Camp Kaitawa! It was going to be a hard action packed week full of drenching rain, climbing mountains almost as big as Mt Everest, falling over times and times again in wet squishy mud, sparkling waterfalls and the horror of packing up.
The rain would just not give up at trying to dampen the high spirits of the Reignier children as we arrived at camp. The cars were caked in mud from the muddy, bumpy roads on the way there. The children were appalled to know after unpacking in the rain that we would be going for a walk. It seemed to us that the rain hardened as we game outside already in our wet weather gear. As we walked I felt ice cold rain drip down my back then my neck and then down my spine. We walked to the power station getting cold and miserable and checked it out half heartedly. It was actually pretty cool. After reading some stuff about it we moved on to walk around the Green Lake. The Green Lake was stunning! If you looked closely you could see trout swimming round in the water. We also walked up the pipeline but I won’t bore you with how miserable we were then. By the time we got back Miss Hewett had lit a lovely warm fire and we immediately felt better. To finish off the day a lady called Aniwa came and gave us what I thought would be a really boring talk but was actually really cool and interesting. Aniwa was named after the waterfall Aniwa.
The next morning we woke up buzzing with excitement. It was our first day of camp. That day we were to climb the Ngamoko. A whole 6 hours to walk! About an hour after breakfast we drove to the start of the Ngamoko, ready and psyched! The first really cool thing we saw was the 800 -1000 year old Rata tree. Aniwa had told us about it last night. After about 10 minutes we kept on walking looking forward to the other cool things we would see. Soon well after 3 hours we were almost at the top. While we were walking the kereru group my group saw a kia in a tree. Finally we were at the top the view was breathtaking all that walking had been worth it. By the time we got back to camp we were exhausted and half of us had to rush to the toilet. That night we slept like we were dead.
After a good night sleep we were only a little bit stiff and tired, but still we were ready for our next walk or should I say next walks. We were going to Michael Noonan's grave and caving. I couldn’t keep still from all the excitement! After a good breakfast and a pep talk we were ready to go. The first part of the walk to Michael Noonan's grave was pretty easy. On our way we stopped and saw a prison were the prisoners were kept in the old days. Some of the soldiers intials were scratched onto a rock. Once all the groups had been to see the jail we kept on going. After about 10 more minutes we were at his grave, it was really creepy and sad. There was also a nine month old baby and a 43 year old next to him. On the way back up the track we stopped to have lunch in a little hut. Then it was time to go caving YEH! The caves were incredibly dark and I was glad I had my head lamp. The mud was also incredible, there was just so much! By the end of the walk not one person wasn’t caked in mud and I was really happy to have my shower that night. After dinner we had a quiz my group came 2 nd equal with the whios. The kiwis beat us. Grrrrr!!
Rise and shine! We woke up to Miss Hewett’s smiling yet tired face. We got up and tidied our bedroom so we were ready for the room inspection. The girls and the boys both had to keep their dorms tidy to win points. We got ready quickly wanting to know what adventures we would get up to that day. That day we were going to do a loop track to see the Aniwa waterfalls. The track was quite hard but I think it was cause we were all so tired. The waterfall was sparkling blue and it reminded me of a fairytale. Walking back to the cars we played a game called famous names to take our minds off how hungry and tired we were. Finally we got back to the cars and had some lunch it was scrumptious. It was a nice sunny day and we enjoyed sitting outside with our friends talking and laughing. Soon after we went back to camp to check out the obstacle course that was actually called the confidence course. Mr Crawford came down with us and timed how long it took your group to do it, my group came 2 nd. The obstacle course was lots of fun and almost everybody joined in. The next thing we did was the cookout! We were making nachos. YUM! Mark and Grant some of the parents on camp told us how to light our fires but it was way harder than they said it was so they had to help pretty much every group. My group found it especially hard cause we only had 2 pieces of kindling. (sucky) Once we had managed to get our fire going we began cooking the onions. Then the mince, then we added the tomato and carrot and last of all we added the nacho mix. Cooking was heaps of fun the only bad thing was the smoke! It stung my eyes SO badly and I cried well my eyes water countless times. Finally it was ready, it tasted so good. We ate and ate till we were completely full! After we had put our fires out we were allowed to roast marshmallows on the one remaining fire. When we came back inside we were really tired but we stayed up long enough to have some of Ro’s (the cook) chocolate self sorting pudding!
The next day we woke up feeling sad that we would be leaving camp but happy that we would see our families again. Miss Hewett came in and told us begin packing up. Uh Oh packing. We began looking round the room trying to find all our stuff forgetting a few socks and things. Once we were all packed we brought our things outside so that Mark (another parent) could pack them in the trailer. We had a last photo outside the camp then got into the cars and drove away. I was in Ro’s car and we sung along to Adele as we drove. It was a lot of fun. We stopped after about an hour to have lunch. As a special surprise the teachers let us have chip butties. Yum! After lunch we drove for a bit longer then stopped again, the parents and teachers bought us ice blocks ( thank you Ro) they were so yum and nice and cold. Finally we made it to school. It felt good to be back. Camp was hard, exciting and tiring but I think we all had a lot of fun and we all survived!
