The purpose of the investigation is to analyze the influence of the level of emotional intelligence on the results in the professional sport Research methods: • Analyses of the literature; • Diagnostic of athletes on the base of the emotional intelligence test; • Analyses of the test results.
The term of "emotional intelligence" was introduced by John Mayer and Peter Salovey in 1990
In 1995 was published a book called "Emotional Intelligence" by Daniel Goleman In this book, he proves that the level of cognitive intelligence is not the only indicator of prospects in life. The people who combine the mind and senses are more successful.
MY AWARENESS OF MYSELF I know what I feel I can say what I feel I am learning how to manage my feelings MY AWARENESS OF OTHERS I know how they feel I can say how they feel I am learning how to manage how they feel
Test 30 athletes were tested in an individual sport (sport shooting) using the method of Emotional Intelligence Scale (EQ) by N. Holl
Results According to the results of the test has been singled out five athletes with low level of emotional intelligence (30 and below) This method detects the ability to understand the attitude of personality, which represented in the emotions, and manage the emotional sphere on the base of making decisions
1. Emotional awareness; 2. Control emotions; 3. Self-motivation; 4. Empathy; 5. Recognition of the emotions of other people
Athletes have a reduced level of control your emotions Athletes have a reduced level of self-motivation As a result… • to loop on the negative experiences; • don’t have enough selfcontrol of their feelings in conflict situations. • difficult to enter a state of calm, readiness, and concentration.
Over a period of time athletes was doing an exercise program for the development of emotional intelligence Repeated tests detected that the level of emotional control and self-motivation for all athletes have increased
The experiment revealed the improvement in the results of the shooting Athlete Shooting 1 Shooting 2 1 2 3 4 5 379 375 378 383 381 382 384 380 385 380
Also 40 athletes were tested in team sports (basketball, volleyball) The results found out • a high rate of team work; • fewer errors; • a minimum of conflict situations in comparison to others; • in the group with most members have a high level of emotional intelligence
Conclusion Emotionally intelligent athletes are able to: • Manage their stress better ; • Identify and change negative emotions that are blocking performance; • Experience maximum concentration; • Respond more positively to athletic coach’s feedback, criticism and direction; • Play their sport with more confidence; • Be less impulsive; • Remain more flexibility with trades, team transitions etc. ; • Maintain more consistent play; • Maintain and increase their positive mindset and get over mistakes and failures better ; • Follow through more successfully on personal goals.
Emotionally intelligent athletes in a team setting are more effective at: • Minimizing conflict with teammates, coaches, trainers; • Enhancing team play in games (e. g. a new hockey draft with a high EI quotient will share the puck more readily); • Communicating better with teams and rally team effort (especially important for team captains); • Performing better in interviews; • Seeing themselves as part of the team vision; • Thinking and acting respectfully to league organization and administration; • Remaining loyal to their team, coach and teammates.
As a result it has been determined that EI is essential in both individual and team sports and can be the key factor in an athlete’s functioning within a team setting. In other words, Emotional Intelligence is a critical factor in determining whether or not an athlete wins. Thus, the development of emotional intelligence is always urgent in the field of professional sports.
