Purpose of a route card: • To identify where a group should be at anytime. • To pre plan for emergencies. • To aid a groups navigation on the ground 3. A well prepared route card should enable a group to follow their route on a map using only the card

Recipe for Route Direction 1. Type of Path Footpath, bridleway, byway, national trail, orange road, yellow road. 2. Direction North, South, East, West, SE, NW etc 3. Distance 300 m, 0. 5 Km, 1. 2 Km, etc 4. Distinguishing Features Through woods, past rectory farm, uphill, across path junction, handrailing river on left 5. To a point where either you change direction or path type changes
Recipe for Route Direction - Examples 1. Footpath SW for 400 m past mast to cross paths, then bridleway W for 1. 5 Km downhill to junction with orange road. 2. Byway N 1 Km past Joe’s farm to junction with road, 200 m west on road then bridleway N to Green Woods. 3. Footpath N, curving NE 1. 5 Km to Manor house, then bridleway E 500 m past church to junction with footpath.
