He began his career as an actor in films, later on in television; all in all he took part in 52 films. Ronald Reagan Retirement and death Reagan retired in 1989. He was succeeded by George Bush Sr. In 1994 Reagan was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, which he suffered from until his death on June 5 th, 2004. Reagan was survived by his wife of 52 years Nancy Reagan.
