English Language Skills in the HND Programme Something to think about: 万事开头难
English Language Skills Quality Enhancement Plan 1. Minimum entry level requirement 2. Introducing additional units to improve candidate performance 3. Developing language skills as part of the HND programme
The Minimum Entry Level Why students must attain a minimum of IELTS 4. 5 (or equivalent) across the 4 skills. 1. Some candidates do not perform as well as expected across the HND programme. 2. Tutors have indicated that they do not have time to give those candidates who have poor skills in English the extra support they need. 3. Candidates have spoken of the pressure of coping when they recognise they lack the English language skills necessary.
The Problem Some candidates do not perform as well as expected across the HND programme.
Consider • Are they on the correct programme for them? • Do we have to look again at our selection criteria? • Are we expecting too much of our students – are we being fair to them? • Do we have adequate learner support in place?
The Problem Tutors have indicated that they do not have time to give those candidates who have poor English skills the extra support they need.
Consider 1. 2. 3. Do we need to look at our timetabling strategy – should the communication units be delivered over the whole year? Should we provide additional ESOL tuition as part of the timetabled programme? Should we adopt a team teaching approach whereby learning support specialists can be made available?
The Problem Candidates have spoken of the pressure of coping when they recognise they lack the language skills necessary.
Consider 1. What support do the students want? 2. How can we change things to lessen the stress they feel? For example: mentors, changes in the assessment process, group support, teaching methods
International English Language Testing System
What you should know about the IELTS There are 2 kinds of IELTS exams where everybody takes the same listening and speaking modules but different reading and writing modules: 1. General training: for those going to secondary education, working or training programmes. 2. Academic: for those going on to higher and further education programmes. Candidates must ensure they choose option 2.
An Example IELTS: Writing Task You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic: A person’s worth nowadays seems to be judged according to social status and material possessions. Old-fashioned values, such as honour, kindness and trust, no longer seem important. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.
IELTS and the British Council As the world’s most popular English test for higher education and global migration, IELTS is accepted by over 10, 000 organisations worldwide. Free online IELTS course: Understanding IELTS: Techniques for English Language Tests https: //www. futurelearn. com/

Kim Tree Resources Updating Materials
Preparation • Tutors must prepare in advance of teaching their topics • This is an ongoing task to keep up to date • Be prepared to update and revise during the delivery of units if required
Resources • Unit Specifications • Sources of materials • Responsibilities • Preparation tools
Unit Specifications • Updated regularly • Must be checked each year • Guides topics to be taught • Specifies the method of assessment
Unit Specification Details • • • Topics to be covered in the unit Outcomes listed in order Knowledge and skills Evidence requirements Assessment guidelines Each outcome within a unit may be different
Changes to Unit Specifications • The unit specifications are reviewed on a regular basis • This ensures they are up to date with current professional practice • Must be checked in detail each time unit delivered • If not using most up to date version – sanctions will be imposed.
Outcomes • These detail the topics to be taught • All topics may not be assessed each time assessment takes place but must be covered. • Do not teach to assessment • Teach to unit specification
Materials • Materials must be up to date • Knowledge of current professional practice will help • Keep up to date with CPD • Use current sources of information • Some unit specifications require that assessment and material is updated annually in line with current UK legislation.
Sources of Materials • Internet – Company results – Financial statements • Textbooks • Own experience in studying • News channels on TV – Current Affairs – BBC World News • Newspapers – China Daily
The Internet as a resource • Internet – why? – Resources are available on demand – You can teach students the skills or research in asking them to look for information. – Materials should be the most up to date – You can tailor the research to specific topics
Textbooks as a resource • Textbooks – why? – Someone else has done the preparation! – You introduce another source of information to your students preparing them for future studies – One text book will not necessarily cover every topic
Television as a resource • News channels on TV – why? – Current Affairs programmes • Keep up to date with the business world – BBC World News • UK qualification, UK news about business will help the students to keep up to date
Newspapers as a resource • Newspapers – China Daily • Business news in the current Chinese markets • Teaches them to keep abreast of business • Use the examples in the newspapers to create mini case studies about topics.
Practical Exercises • Real life business cases – Current topics in news – Current topics that the students are familiar with • Apple • Nokia • Football/sporting teams • Apply the learning from all units by asking them to answer questions which will develop understanding
Responsibility of Tutor • Prepare students for further study • Keep yourself up to date • Remember you know the content of the assessment • Prepare the students for developing skills identified in unit specifications • Help them to apply those skills in different situations
And finally ……… • Use a range of resources • Keep yourself up to date with what is current in business practice • Don’t be afraid to try new resources
Which one would you prefer?
