Duty Hours • House staff are required to complete a monthly 6 -question survey regarding duty hours. (See agreement, pages 27 & 28) • House staff are required to complete a 4 week log of duty hours worked twice yearly, in August and February
Parking 1. Parking lot 12 is reserved for residents 2. If Lot 12 is full, residents may park in any employee lot (blue signs). 3. Residents returning for noon conference may park in the lot across from the RV park. 4. Must have parking sticker on vehicles 5. Please call Security department at extension 4 -4444 with questions.
Medical Licensure • Residents and fellows are required to have a valid TSBME Physician-In-Training permit or a Texas Medical License in order to participate in a training program. • Physician-in-Training permits shall be issued with effective dates corresponding with the beginning and ending dates of the postgraduate resident’s training program. (TBME Rule 171) • If you have a Texas medical license, a copy must be provided to your GME Program Coordinator.
Rotation Change Day • July 1 is the start date of each new academic year. • Rotations change on the first workday of each month. Weekends and holidays are not considered workdays.
Resident Responsibilities • With supervision and consistent with education and experience, assume responsibility for the safe, effective and compassionate care of patients. • Participate fully in the educational and scholarly activities of the residency program. • Develop a personal program of learning • Participate in institutional programs, committees, councils & activities.
Resident Responsibilities • Participate in confidential evaluation of program and faculty. • Develop competency in patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism and systems-based practice. • Apply cost containment in the provision of patient care.
Resident Responsibilities • Keep charts, records and reports up to date and signed at all times. • Adhere to ACGME institutional and program requirements. • Participate in educational programs regarding physician impairment, substance abuse, quality assurance, and patient safety. • Participate in autopsies whenever appropriate.
Stipends/Payroll • Direct deposit is utilized by distribution of payroll. Direct Deposit Advice pay stubs are mailed to the address you provide to Payroll. • House staff are paid at two-week intervals on alternate Thursdays.
Pay days 2005 • • • July 14 and July 28 August 11 and August 25 September 8 and September 22 October 6 and October 20 November 3 and November 17 December 1, December 15, and December 29
Call Quarters • Scott & White provides sleeping quarters for all house staff required to remain overnight in the hospital • Some call rooms are secured with programmable locks. Contact your program coordinator for details.
Call Meals • Call meals are provided by Scott & White in the hospital cafeteria • The amount allowed is a maximum of $5. 00 for each meal • Each resident will receive a meal card • Contact your coordinator regarding problems with your meal card
House Staff Attire • General attire will be neat, clean, moderate in style. • Extremely casual styles should be avoided at all times. • Clean lab coat and name badge will be worn at all times.
House Staff Attire • Lab coats and scrub suits for call duty are to be maintained by the house officer. • Scrubs for operative procedures are maintained by OR. • If your personal lab coat or scrub suits become contaminated with blood contact the Laundry at ext. 4 -0818.
Grievance Problem-Solving Procedure • Scott & White encourages residents/fellows to bring to the attention of Program Directors concerns or complaints about work-related conditions • Complaints of discrimination or harassment may be addressed through procedures outlined in Policy #GME-R 07 or by contacting Cutrina Catlin, the Director of Human Resources, ext. 4 -3771. • Dr. William Meek (pager 1549 ext 4 -2460) is the Ombusdperson, whose role is to provide residents/fellows an advocate for resolving issues and provide additional confidential communication mechanism for residents.
Moonlighting h Moonlighting that occurs within the residency program and/or sponsoring institution must be counted toward the 80 -hour weekly limit on duty hours. h. To moonlight you must have a valid Texas medical license. (http: //www. tsbme. state. tx. us/rules) h Program directors must be informed in advance of any employment undertaken outside the training program; this information is part of the resident/fellow’s folder.
Promotion/Reappointment • Is based on successful completion of the current year; decision is made by your Program Director. • To participate in a program beyond the first 18 months, house staff must be eligible for licensure by passing USMLE III or equivalent. • Texas license is not required • Your program director may request a 6 -month extension in writing to the GME Admin Office • There will be no extension beyond 24 months of trainin
Substance Abuse • Abuse of controlled substances by physicians and house staff may lead to the destruction of professional careers, personal and family life and even to the loss of life itself. • Scott & White performs routine drug screening at the beginning of residency training. • A resident with a substance abuse problem who wants help can contact his/her Program Director, Department Chairman, or Coordinator. An appropriate referral for examination and treatment will be made
Life Support Certification • House staff must acquire and maintain appropriate life support certifications in order to participate in Texas A&M-Scott & White medical education programs. • Documentation of current certification is required for GME house staff personnel files.
Leave Policy • Upon employment all residents and fellows have three weeks(15 days) of vacation and 13 days paid sick leave per year • All leave must be documented and approved with a completed Absence Request Form with signatures of the Program Director and attending physician. Contact your program coordinator for details.
Professional Organization Membership • Scott & White provides membership in the American Medical Association for residents and fellows. • House Staff membership in Texas Medical Assn. and Bell County Medical Society is paid by Scott & White • TMAIT disability and life insurance coverage is paid by Scott & White. A membership application must be completed at orientation for TMAIT coverage.
Professional Liability • Scott & White provides professional liability insurance for house staff which covers their activities at Scott & White and when on educational assignment in affiliated hospitals and clinics. • You must provide your own professional liability coverage, if and when you engage in outside employment activities (“Moonlighting”).
Tuition Reimbursement • Scott & White has a tuition assistance program to provide employees a means to broaden their knowledge within their position or within other Scott & White needed fields of study through approved educational programs. • Full-time residents and fellows are eligible for tuition reimbursement up to a maximum of $900. 00 per semester with completion of a Tuition Assistance Form prior to registration.
