Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn July 15, 1606 - October 4, 1669 Rembrandt was a Dutch painter. Generally considered one of the greatest painters and printmakers in European art history and the most important in Dutch history.
Biography • Rembrant was born on July 15, 1606, in Leiden, in the Dutch Republic. Today is is called the Netherlands. • He was the ninth child born to Harmen Gerritszoon van Rijn and Neeltgen Willemsdochter van Zuytbrouck. • His father was a miller and his mother was a baker’s daughter. As a boy he attended Latin school and was enrolled at the University of Leiden.
Biography • At the end of 1631, Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam, and began to practice as a professional portraitist for the first time, with great success. • In his paintings and prints he exhibited knowledge of classical iconography, , which he molded to fit the requirements of his own experience; thus, the depiction of a biblical scene was informed by Rembrandt's knowledge of the specific text, his assimilation of classical composition, and his observations of Amsterdam’s Jewish population. • Because of his empathy for the human condition, he has been called "one of the great prophets of civilization. " Then he met Saskia, and married her.
Career • He apprenticed a Leiden history painter, Jacob van Swanenburgh, with whom he spent three years. • Then, after a brief but important apprenticeship of six months with the famous painter Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam, Rembrant opened a studio in Leiden in 1624 or 1625, which he shared with friend and colleague Jan Lievens. • In 1629 Rembrandt was discovered by the statesman Constantijin Huygens, famous Dutch mathematician and physicist, and as a result of this connection, Prince Frederik Hendrik continued to purchase paintings from Rembrant until 1646. • Rembrandt opened a studio in Leiden in 1624 or 1625, which he shared with friend and colleague Jan Lievens.
Students: Gerrit Dou • In 1627, Rembrandt began to accept students, among them Gerrit Dou. • At the age of 15 he became a pupil of Rembrandt, with whom he continued for three years. • From the great master of the Dutch school he acquired his skill in coloring, and in the more subtle effects of charioscuro; and the style of Rembrandt is reflected in several of his earlier pictures, notably in a portrait of himself at the age of 22. Students: Ferdinand Bol • He was a Dutch artist, and draftsman. • His surviving work is rare, it displays Rembrandt’s iunfluence; like his mater, Bol favored historical subject portraits, and numerous self portraits. June 24, 1616 – August 24, 1680
Students: Govert Flinck • His first subject picture is the Blessing of Jacob, in the Amsterdam museum (1638). • Both are thoroughly Rembrandtesque in effect as well as in vigour of touch and warmth of flesh tints. January 25, 1615 – February 2, 1660
