About Arkhangelsk is one of the oldest Russian cities. It was founded in 1584 on the bank of the Northern Dvina not far from the place where it flows into the White Sea. Before the foundation of St. Petersburg Arkhangelsk was the only "window" to Europe and the only seaport. Situatied on the right bank of the Northern Dvina River and on several islands, the city amazes by its vast building scale and contrasts of its old and modern parts. During the last years the city has changed greatly. A lot of many-storeyed buildings and public cultural centers were erected. Arkhangelsk is one of the largest scientific and cultural centers in the European North. There are three higher educational institutions: Pomor University, Technical University and Medical University, many research institutes, concert halls and three theaters. Lots of tourists are attracted to the Museum of Regional Ethnography, the Art Museum and the Museum of Wooden Architecture. Arkhangelsk boasts woodcarving, bone-carving, decorative painting on wood, birch-bark processing, pattern weaving and embroidery, making clay toys and other folk handicrafts passed on from generation to generation. Foundation of NSMU Arkhangelsk State Medical Institute (ASMI) was opened on December, 16 th in 1932 for providing European North of the country with medical staff. In 1994 ASMI was reorganized into Arkhangelsk State Medical Academy (ASMA). Another reorganization took place on the 9 th of October, 2000 – into North State Medical University (NSMU).

NSMU today is a multifield university with almost all of the medical and social directions. 77 Doctors of Science and 250 Candidates of Science work in the university. There are 9500 students studying in NSMU.

System of continual education There are preparative courses for entrants. The university offers preparation of scientific and educational staff for graduates. It can be realized through postgraduate studies, doctoral studies and getting a degree of Doctor or Candidate of Science.

International Relations NSMU converses with 25 scientific and educational institutions in Russia, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany, Poland Lithuania.

International Students There are nearly 300 foreign students in the university.

Recognition basis University is recognized by WHO, ECFMG (USA), Medical Board of California, Eligible to practice in India as per MCI regulation. More than 100 graduates are working abroad (USA, UK, Canada, Israel, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Portugal etc. ); 20 graduates have got Ph. D abroad; Now 22 graduates are preparing for Рн. D in Europe.
