Themes n contemporary society n middle-class characters, situations, and problems n complex, three-dimensional characters shaped by their family and heritage n unhappy marriages, relationships, sex, prostitution, diseases, religious hypocrisy, social inequality
Characteristics n written in prose n realistic settings and natural speech, dialogue n natural movement, gesticulation and mimicry n unities of time and place n often takes place indoors n emphasis on the depth of characters n creates tension and focus (=izražanje z kretnjami, obrazom) (=enotnost časa in prostora)
Theatrical elements n stage settings accurately reproduce ordinary surroundings n attention to detail n electric lighting n box set (proscenium stage) n slamming doors
The well-made play (=dobro narejena igra) Ø Form of drama popular between realist playwrights § secrets known to audience, withheld from certain characters § expected, logical reversals, hero - successes and failures § the secret is revealed - the climax, the antagonist is revealed § the protagonist has dignity restored, receives reward § denouement is believable and logical
