RDA: A New Approach to Cataloguing Margaret Stewart Standards, Library and Archives Canada SOLS, April 21 and April 23, 2009
Outline RDA, the standard Ø Ø review of key features influences on RDA – FRBR and FRAD comparison with AACR 2 examples RDA, the web tool Ø content: the RDA instructions and content Ø tools: functionality to improve cataloguing work Looking ahead to training
RDA, the standard new standard designed for use in digital environment replaces AACR 2 removal of Anglo-American bias not just for libraries focus on organizing information for the benefit of the user
RDA replaces AACR 2 RDA builds on the strengths of AACR 2 ØAACR 2 is used around the world Øtranslated into 24 languages Øconstantly evolving ØFRBR and FRAD conceptual foundation
FRBR Focus on the user (end-user not cataloguer) FRBR tasks Find Identify Select Obtain
IME ICC International Cataloguing Principles 0. General Objectives There are several objectives that direct the construction of cataloguing codes. The highest is the convenience of the user. 0. 1. Convenience of the user of the catalogue. Decisions taken in the making of descriptions and controlled forms of names for access should be made with the user in mind.
RDA Structure General Introduction Elements Relationships – Appendices • Capitalization, Abbreviations, Initial articles, etc. • Presentation (ISBD, MARC 21) • Relationship designators
Sect. 1: Recording Attributes of Manifestion and Item Chapter 1: General guidelines Chapter 2: Identifying manifestations and items FRBR task = Identify Describing carriers FRBR task = Select Providing acquisition and access information FRBR task = Obtain Chapter 3: Chapter 4:
New RDA terminology heading area uniform title see reference main entry physical description access point element preferred title variant access point preferred access point describing carriers
RDA elements Core GMD replacement: Media, Carrier and Content Types Other new elements: Custodial information for archival resources, Braille characteristics
RDA Elements RDA element Title – Title proper – Parallel title – Other title information (etc. ) element sub-type
“Designed for the digital world” work with existing catalogues and database structures take advantage of newly emerging database structures re-use of metadata describe and give access to all types of resources, analog, digital, etc.
RDA vs AACR 2 RDA: “to take advantage of the digital environment” v stop fussing about abbreviations v more “take as is” – principle of representation v transcribe inaccuracies; add note if necessary v enable re-use of metadata AACR 2: rules from the card catalogue era v when to abbreviate, when not to abbreviate – concern with space on card v “transcription” but also required to omit and sometimes to supply data v use of [sic] or correction of inaccuracies
RDA vs AACR 2 RDA: content standard v not a display standard v use with many encoding schema v data elements v use by non-library metadata communities AACR 2: content and display v many display conventions already ignored v “areas” with string of data tied together: not friendly for use in a web environment v the library’s standard
RDA vs AACR 2 RDA: “to describe all types of resources” v three separate elements to record: v. Content type v. Media type v. Carrier type AACR 2: problems with new types of resources v limitations of rule 0. 24 v rules organized according to “class of material” v limited list of GMDs
RDA vs AACR 2 RDA: more information for users v no more restrictions such as “rule of three” v make the relationships between entities clear to the user: appendices I, J and K = lists of relationship designators v no more Latin abbreviations AACR 2: limitations of the 3 x 5 card v limits for description & access when multiple authors v more focus on single record, less on relationships v “et al. ”, “S. l. ”, “s. n. ”

RDA new standard, new format written and delivered as an online tool also delivers additional functionality easier to use, easier to teach individual or collaborative use efficiency and customization – more people at different levels of expertise can use it – easier to promote consistent application of standards – flexible and customizable for different communities of users
JSC Working Documents RDA Table of Contents Changes from AACR 2 Issues deferred until after the 1 st release RDA Elements Table http: //www. collectionscanada. gc. ca/jsc/working 1. html
RDA Online/ Implementation ILS: Input templates for cataloguing – Listing the elements and links to RDA guidelines (depends on the ILS vendor) Workflows in RDA Online – Step-by-step process with link to RDA guidelines – RDA Online wizard to create your own “workflows” – Share “workflows”
Suggested changes for systems New MARC fields for RDA elements – Content type, carrier type/media type – Added relator terms (Appendix I) – Authority format fields for dates, places, etc. , for names 35
More system changes Input/verification functions (import/export) Indexes for new data elements 36
“Legacy” records (now in systems) Existing records generally will not need changing (exceptions: ‘global updating’ for Bible, Department) MARC 21 encoding standard 37
RDA Online and Local System Designed to allow integration with library systems Initially view in parallel through Web connection 38
RDA training 1 st release of RDA will be as an online resource focus on training and implementation plans after 1 st release of the full content testing and training will use RDA online different models for delivery of training under consideration e. g. , web seminars, “train the trainer”
RDA Implementation Late 2009 or early 2010: First Release 2010: Implementation 40
