Declaration of the Rights of Man • Aug 1789, Nat’l Assembly ends estates and gives ppl rights, fix taxes

Great Fear, Oct 1789 • Ppl continue to panic, break into nobles’ chateaux • Women’s March on Versailles: Price of bread still rising, women break into the palace

• Marie Antoinette is (falsely) rumored to say: “Let them eat cake!” What should the king do? • King & Queen go with mob back to Paris • King & family are put under house arrest • How will this look to the people of France?

Church Reforms • National Assembly takes Church’s land to pay off debt • Also make priests gov workers – Worries devout Catholics that Church is no longer able to act out its religious role but is only following gov orders – This includes many peasants & the King

Escape! • Many monarchists begin to flee • King & family try to escape the country in June 1791 – Go to Austria – How would this look to the ppl of France? • But they get caught! Forced to return to Paris

National Assembly • Must decide: 1. Should they end the monarchy completely? 2. Should they make a constitutional monarchy? 3. Should they restore most of the power back to the king?

New Constitution • Sept 1791: Louis signs new constitution: – Limited monarchy: king enforces laws – Legislative Assembly: (new name for Natl Assembly) – writes laws, declares war – Is this a good deal for the king? For the people?

Revolutionary Wars • Prussia & Austria send troops to restore monarchy – Why would they do that? • Prussia nears Paris & promises to destroy it IF they harm king • MOBS attack royal home, send royal family to prison
