Project Group CMS-Trigger Claudia-Elisabeth Wulz HEPHY Scientific Advisory Board Meeting October 1, 2008
The CMS Experiment • • The “Compact Muon Solenoid” CMS is a general purpose experiment exploring the full spectrum of physics offered by the “Large Hadron Collider” LHC at CERN. The CMS detector was closed in August 2008 and saw the first signals of the LHC beams on the 10 th of September 2008. October 1, 2008 Claudia-Elisabeth Wulz 2
Mission Statement of CMS-Trigger Group • Provide the Global Trigger (first level trigger decision for all events and distribution to subsystems) • Provide the Trigger Control System (readiness, partition control, trigger rules) • Provide the Drift Tube Track Finder (barrel regional muon trigger) • Provide the Global Muon Trigger • Provide the Trigger Supervisor • Provide off-line and on-line software October 1, 2008 Claudia-Elisabeth Wulz 3

Regional Muon Trigger Drift Tube Chambers Track Finder Processor • Pipeline logic running at 40 MHz (LHC bunch crossing frequency) • Implemented in programmable logic devices • Based on extrapolation and pattern matching methods October 1, 2008 Claudia-Elisabeth Wulz 5
Track Finding Track segment (with direction of extrapolation) Phi Track Finder (Sector Processor) Eta Track Finder The trigger is based on correlating compatible track segments pointing to the vertex. At most four detector planes are used in azimuth (transverse to the magnetic field direction) and three in pseudorapidity (along the beam axis). If possible, track candidates found in both projections are then matched. October 1, 2008 Claudia-Elisabeth Wulz 6

Global Muon Trigger The GMT combines DT/CSC/RPC muon candidates in a sophisticated way (no simple AND/OR, geometry and track qualities are taken into account). Algorithms are optimized to achieve: • high efficiency • reasonable trigger rates • suppression of fake muons GMT Option e % |h|<2. 1 Rate k. Hz for 14 Ge. V thr. Global Trigger, Trigger Control System TCS module The Global Trigger takes the level-1 accept decision: It calculates algorithms for each event, every 25 ns, and decides if it is to be rejected or sent to the High-Level Trigger for further analysis. The L 1 A signal is distributed to the subsystems. Trigger Menu: 128 physics algorithms based on trigger objects (including topological conditions) and 64 technical triggers are possible. The physics trigger menu is fully programmable. Trigger Control System: According to the status of subsystems including the data acquisition or trigger rules triggers may be inhibited.
