Hypothesis If we test different brands of paper towels to see their strength, then Bounty Jumbo roll will be the strongest.
Materials paper towels 3 people water pennies cup
Variables Constant Variables: Manipulated Variable: water different brands of paper towels pennies 3 people cup Responding Variable: the number of pennies the paper towels can hold
Procedures 1. Dampen a paper towel in a cup with 30 ml of water. 2. Squeeze out any excess water. 3. Two people hold the paper towel. 4. Another person quickly places the pennies one at a time while counting them. 5. Continue until the paper towel rips. Be sure to subtract the last penny. 6. Repeat the experiment 2 times with the same brand. 7. Repeat steps 1 -6 with the other brands.

Results Bounty Jumbo averaged 173 pennies. Sparkle averaged 169 pennies. Brawny averaged 146 pennies. Winn Dixie averaged 202 pennies. Great Value averaged 190 pennies. Bounty Basic averaged 173 pennies. Publix averaged 145 pennies. Fiora averaged 54 pennies. The school’s paper towel averaged 128 pennies. Finally, 1 Big Roll averaged 67 pennies.
Conclusion Our hypothesis was not supported by our experiment. Bounty Jumbo was tied for third place with Bounty Basic. Winn Dixie came in first. One reason could have been because some groups did not count the pennies as fast as other groups. We learned to fold the edges so that more pennies could be placed. This could explain why Bounty did not win. Also, Winn Dixie had to wait for more pennies and it ripped while waiting.
Application From now on we would buy Winn Dixie brand paper towels. We may also try to retest now that we know how to hold the paper towels. Never underestimate a paper towel because of what a commercial says or what it looks like. We wonder what would happen if we held the paper towels the same way. Would our results be different?
Abstract We wanted to know which paper towel was the strongest. We thought that Bounty Jumbo was going to be the strongest because of the commercials and Consumer Reports. We got a paper towel folded it, wet it, unfolded it, then two people placed pennies until it ripped. The results were that instead of Bounty Jumbo, Winn Dixie won. We concluded that our hypothesis was not supported by our experiment. Bounty Jumbo and Basic tied for third place. Winn Dixie won, and Great Value came in second. From now on we will buy Winn Dixie because it is the strongest. If we were to repeat the experiment, we could hold the paper towels at the same level and place the pennies quickly.
