pro-i. Biosphere Coordination and Policy Development in Preparation for a European Open Biodiversity Knowledge Management System Supported by the European Commission through its FP 7 research funding programme
Review of WP 4: Technical and infrastructure coordination Lyubomir Penev, Pavel Stoev, Teodor Georgiev Pro-i. Biosphere Leiden meeting, 11 -15 February 2013, Leiden
General aims and framework Studies, actions, promotion, monitoring, adoption, strategies and agreement on: technical and semantic interoperability between biodiversity platforms common mark-up standards and schemas exchange of biodiversity-specific information, such as localities, treatments, keys, names, and references
Three key objectives Increased cooperation between biodiversity EU and non. EU projects and biodiversity platforms, current and previously funded Improved taxon treatment servers; cooperation and coordination between electronic registers of taxon names Increased technical and semantic interoperability, through improvement of the XML schemas and standards

Pilot studies Task 4. 1 Improve technical cooperation and interoperability at the e-infrastructure level (lead FUB-BGBM) 1. Pensoft-Plazi-FUB-BGBM: interoperability between taxonomic working platforms (CDM, Scratchpads), treatment repositories (EOL, Plazi, Species-ID), and electronic registers (IPNI, Index Fungorum, Myco. Bank, Zoo. Bank). 2. Plazi-FUB-BGBM: pipelining information from XML-based PLAZI repositories to CDMstores. 3. Plazi -FUB-BGBM: access to PLAZI data through EDIT at human-readable and service-level Task 4. 2 Promote and monitor the development and adoption of common mark-up standards and interoperability (lead: Plazi) 1. Pensoft-Plazi: interoperability between taxon treatments from both legacy and prospective literature from three organismic domains (fungi, plants and animals) 2. Pensoft: a common XML-query model for automated registration of higher plants (IPNI), fungi (Index Fungorum, Myco. Bank) and animals (Zoo. Bank) 3. Plazi: Revision of a tool (Chara. Parser) that generates identification keys by reusing parsed characters from treatments
Background and solutions Improvement of existing workflows and schemas Support by currently developed new workflows and tools Automated registration of taxonomic/nomenclatural acts Collaborative authoring and publishing platform Biodiversity Data Journal
