International Women's Day goes back to 1908 when New York garment workers protested inhuman treatment and low wages.
Though the police tore apart the protest, the group went on to found the first women's labor union, according to the United Nations.
In 1910 a second International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen.
It was proposed that every year in every country there should be Woman’s Day.
Women at the conference from over 17 countries gave the suggestion unanimous approval.
In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political, and social achievements.
Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries, primarily Eastern Europe, Russia, and the former Soviet bloc.
In some regions, the day lost its political flavor, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day.
In other regions, however, the political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong.
It is an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women.
It is an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women.
In 1975, during International Women's Year, the United Nations began celebrating International Women's Day on 8 March.
They urged an end to discrimination and an increase of support for women's full and equal participation.
For women’s day a man wants to knock his wife’s socks off.
The man says: "Right now, for this Women’s Day,
I am going to make you the happiest woman in the world!"
The woman says: "Oh dear…
I will miss you!"
Wouldn’t you much rather be a woman than a man?
Women can cry,
they can wear cute clothes,
…and they're the first to be rescued off sinking ships.
Why aren’t there more women superheroes?
Because they would take way too long to get changed.
