MARKET WEEK Moscow June 1 st 2011 VASCO d’AVILLEZ, NOTES Since Catherine the Great, 1726, Portugal sends wine to Russia, with great success: Moscatel de Setúbal; Vinho do Pico from Açores Islands. Later, after her time, Port Wine arrived also.
Indigenous White Grape Varieties (some examples) Alvarinho Fernão Pires • Vinho. Verde (Monção Melgaço); low-yield grape; • dry, crisp, aromatic wines; • notes of peach, citrus fruits, apple, and often with mineral character. • The most planted white variety in Portugal (Palmela, Tejo, Sado, Setúbal, Bairrada …); • very versatile grape • crisp, aromatic whites, sparklings, but also sweet dessert wines. Arinto • Pedernã in Vinho Verde; • balanced acidity; • hints of lemon and pineapple; • with aging potential. Encruzado • Widely planted in Dão region; • floral and mineral aromas; • usually fermented in oak for more complexity.
Indigenous Red Grape Varieties (some examples) Aragonês • = Tinta Roriz, or Tempranillo; • produces fruity, dark and aromatic wines. Touriga Nacional • Low yield; • high concentration of sweetness, aromas, tannins and color; • with aromas of dark berry fruits, notes of pine, eucalyptus and rockrose. Trincadeira • Tinta Amarela in Douro and Dão; • wines with considerable power and balanced tannins; • notes of blackberry, plum, chocolate, pepper and herbs on the nose. Baga • Popular in Bairrada; • produces fullbodied, tannic and complex wines; • notes of blackcurrants, blackberries, pepper, herbs and smoke on the nose; • good aging potential. Castelão • Widely planted; • notes of raspberry and red currant ; • smooth and easy to drink wines.

VINHO VERDE Region - rolling hills and montains; - small parcels (below 0. 8 ha) - very green landscape (Vinho “Verde“); - Average 34, 000 ha planted. Climate - influence from the Atlantic; - frequent rain falls. Soil - granitic soil, occasionaly schist.
VINHO VERDE Traditional vs. modern training systems Main Varieties: Alvarinho, Trajadura, Loureiro, Vinhão Wines: • light, crisp and very slightly petillant; • With aromas of apples, limes and flowers.

Soil Granite, slate, schist, lime and clay.
BAIRRADA / DÃO / BEIRA INTERIOR Main Varieties - Touriga Nacional; Jaen; Alfrocheiro; Baga; Fernão Pires. Wines - Fruity; - earthy and vegetal edge; - ageing potential.

ALENTEJO Region - vast and rural area of flat plains with occasional low hills; -large sized properties; -other traditional cultures: cereals, cork and olives. Climate - Warm and dry. Soil - Rich clay soil, with granite and schist.
ALENTEJO Varieties Roupeiro, Antão Vaz, Aragonês, Trincadeira. Wine - Reds are full-bodied, fruity and have good ageing potential.

ALGARVE Region - Vast and rural area (inland) of flat plains with occasional low hills; - medium size properties; - other traditional cultures: orange, almonds. Climate - Atlantic coast: hot and dry - Rest of Algarve: cooler. Soil : - Rocky soils; - made of red or yellow sandstone.
ALGARVE Main varieties Negra Mole, Castelão Roupeiro, Bual branco, Manteudo. Wines - soft reds
AÇORES (Azores) Region - The cultivation of vine goes back to the time of the settlement of the Azorean islands. Wines of exceptional quality obtained mostly from the Verdelho; - average of planted vine/island: Graciosa - 14 ha; Biscoitos – 14 ha; Pico - 100 ha. Climate - Maritime - mild temperatures with small thermal amplitude, high pluviosity and humidity. Soils Graciosa: normal, not very thick soils of good earth over volcanic rocks. Biscoitos and Pico: non humid lithoids and stone like soils over consolidated basalt or similar rocks, usually corresponding to recent lava flows.
AÇORES Main varieties Whites: Verdelho, Arinto, Fernão Pires, Generosa, Boal. Reds: Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Saborinho, Agronómica. Wines Graciosa: light, fresh, dry and quite fruity. Biscoitos and Pico: Cordial and also Dry wines of complex spicy bouquet, with full body and good structure. Pico Graciosa Biscoitos
PENINSULA DE SETÚBAL Region The region is flanked by the Tagus estuary, Atlantic Ocean and the Sado River. Protected from the sea by the Arrábida range of mountains. Climate - Atlantic climate with regular rainfalls; - Warm summers, mild winter. Soil Sandy soil and stony chalk.
PENINSULA DE SETÚBAL Main varieties Moscatel de Setúbal, Castelão, Fernão Pires. Wines - Early maturing red wines with notes of red currants and raspberries. Wine with ageing potential. - Moscatel de Setúbal – fortified wine with long ageing time in barrel and with nutty, raisiny and honeyed aromas.

MADEIRA Region Characterised by the steep orography of the terrain. The particular conditions of the soil (of volcanic origin), the proximity of the sea, the climatic conditions and the one-of-a kind production process give the wine its unique and singular characteristics Climate - Characterised by its microclimates, has hot and humid summers and mild winters. Soils Basaltic (volcanic origin), in general, they have a clay texture.
MADEIRA Main varieties Sercial, Verdelho, Boal, Malvasia and Tinta Negra. Wines: Fortyfied: Sweetness balanced by a good dose of acidity, full body, with good structure, notes of dried fruits. Regional and DOC: Medium body reds and fruity whites. Reds age for 3 to 5 years and whites are for immediate consumption.
DOURO / PORTO Region Vineyards planted on stone -walled terraces on the hills and on the banks of the river Douro and its tributaries. 3 Sub-regions Baixo-corgo, Cima Corgo and Douro Superior - one of the wildest landscapes in the world - av. 40, 500 ha of planted vine - average property size – 1. 2 ha Soil Climate - Very hot in the summer; - cold in the winter; - low precipitation. - Schist; rocky soils; - low yields
DOURO / PORTO Main varieties Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz (Aragonês), Tinta Barroca Touriga Nacional, Tinta Amarela. . . Over 100 Grapes! Wines - Dark colours, inky, opaque, ripe black berried; - with notes of rockrose.
