th 18 cent. English Grammar - largely unsystematized and uncertain.
This led to appearance of Prescriptive Grammar (from 2/2 of the 18 th c. till 1900)
The aim of PRESCRIPTIVE GRAMMARS reduce the EL to rules forbid <wrong> expressions set up a standard of correct usage create the SYSTEM of EL EL – English language
2/2 of the 18 th c. grammarians • R. Lowth, Short Introduction to English Gr, 1762. • L. Murray, English Gr Adapted to the Different Classes of Learners, 1795.
MORPHOLOGY Lowth and his contemporaries… 1) worked out the system of case for nouns and pronouns, established the term <possessive case>; 2) extended the rules for the formation of the Future Tense.
SYNTAX Lowth and his contemporaries… 1) distinguished an agent = (now the subject), an attribute = (now the predicate) and an object as principal parts of the sentence; 2) developed the study of <phrase> as a grammatical term; 3) condemned double negatives.
2/2 of the 19 th c. grammarians • C. P. Mason, English Gr, 1858; • A. Bain, Higher Eng Gr, 1863.
MORPHOLOGY C. P. Mason & A. Bain… made the explanation of the grammatical forms more detailed.
SYNTAX C. P. Mason & A. Bain… 1) reduced the number of the principle parts to 2: the subject & the predicate; 2) called an attribute – secondary/dependent part of the sentence; 3) Compound S: compound sentence proper (Rus ССП) and complex sentence with clauses (СПП).
The new syntactic system of S analysis replaced an old method of describing S elements morphologically.
