Shipbreaking in South Asia Key Interventions • ILO Guidelines on Safety and Health in Shipbreaking in Asia and Turkey translated into Bangla, Hindi and Urdu • National Tripartite Seminar in Alang on Safety, Health and Environment in Shipbreaking (presentation of guidelines) • SAFEREC • Draft training modules produced in India • Limited activities in Pakistan 6
SAFEREC • Results – baseline survey, development of training materials, training of trainers, training for 5 -6000 workers and supervisors, govt. officials, establishment of training cells in active yards, study -tour to China, equipment • More work needed – Framework development (national guidelines, regulatory framework), interagency cooperation, more involvement of employers and workers and promotion of social dialogue, strengthening of institutional capacity; – capacity further training, best pratices, data collection and impact assessment, strengthening of institutional capacity; – Other aspects of decent work; – Closer linkage to the environmental and shipping aspects; 7
