Reading Skill Distinguishing Facts from Opinions Being able to distinguish facts from opinions is the first essential step in acquiring a critical reading ability. Many authors intermingle (混合) statements of fact and opinion in such a way that it is sometimes hard to tell them apart. First let’s see their definitions.
Reading Skill A fact is a statement about which there could be no argument. Opinions are statements which could be denied or argued against, even though you may agree with them.
Reading Skill Usually many students make the mistake of reading opinions they agree with as facts. If, for example, an author writes, “Most teachers are more interested in educating children than in making a lot of money, ” and does not support this statement with concrete evidence, it is a statement of opinion no matter how much you or anyone else agree with.
Reading Skill Example: There are various ways of thinking about social differentiation. One common one is based on difference in sex roles (Fact). There is no society on earth where males and females have identical roles (Fact). Some people think this is due to biological differences between men and women (Opinion). Others think it is the result of cultural influences (Opinion).
Reading Skill As we see from the example above, a fact is usually a truth. It should be true when tested by observation or experimentation. An opinion, in contrast, usually shows one’s belief, feeling or value judgment. It can not be objectively verified (证 明 / 核 对 ). An opinion ought to be based on facts, but in reading we might often come to opinions which are not based on facts. They can be very subjective. You may agree or disagree with them.
Reading Skill Practice 1, P. 15 Being able to distinguish facts from opinions will help you to grasp the author’s point of view so that you may achieve better comprehension in your reading. Read the following paragraph.
