Measuring What Matters: Mike Schmoker What is a 21 st-Century Education? The most prominent advocates of 21 st-century education all stress the importance of learning essential content by way of authentic intellectual skills. These advocates' documents invariably contain the terms critical thinking and problem solving. They emphasize the ability to argue, analyze others' arguments, conduct research, and acquire such "habits of mind" as the ability to invent or synthesize information. Literacy—the ability to read, write, and make effective presentations—is central (Berliner & Biddle, 1995; Kay & Houlihan, 2006; Pearlman, 2006).

What is the purpose of the WVDE CTE Capstone?

“A student capstone is a culminating, multifaceted assessment for demonstrating learning from all courses in a concentration. A capstone is created and controlled by the student, facilitated by the teacher and evaluated by outside entities. ” ~ Capstone Technical Assessment Guidance; WVDE

Three Core Components Written Component Product Presentation

Summarizing what makes an effective Capstone: Product ideas & standards Related academic skills? Problem solving? Breadth and depth? NOT a Capstone product Criteria to accept proposals?

Project Component Project will result in a product or an internship (300 hours) that includes as many skill sets as possible from the concentration. Students in multiple concentrations are required to complete a project for each concentration. Internships must have a completed copy of the WVDE Internship Employers Evaluation Form and include it as part of the presentation. NOTE: Agriculture SAE, NCCER credential attainment (80%) JROTC, JUMS, Pro. Start Certificate of Achievement, PLTW, and SREB AC Engineering Notebook can be used as the project Component of the Capstone Assessment.

Written Portion Prompts: Prompt 1: Summarize your Capstone and how it relates to your CTE Concentration NOTE: Agriculture SAE, JROTC, JUMS, PLTW, and SREB AC Engineering Notebook meet the requirements of the Capstone Written Component.

Written Portion Prompts: Prompt 2: Identify at least 5 Primary Skills, Competencies and Knowledge within your concentration and how they contribute to your successful completion of the Capstone.

Presentation Component Students are required to present projects and portfolios to a panel of evaluators. The evaluation team should consist of at least one industry person. Other team members may be school/county employees and the team should be no more than three members. The student’s CTE teacher cannot be one of the evaluators. Date of presentation is scheduled by the school. Administrators will collect the two or three % scores from teachers and enter each student’s average % score into WVEIS WOW by June 15 th

The Teachers’ Role Determine how the Capstone (and Portfolio) will be used in terms of grading? Guide the students in topic selection. Approve the students’ topic. Assist in guiding the organizational system for students’ work. (electronic files for written work, etc…) Assist the students with keeping notes, examples, information, questions, etc. . From the very beginning of the process that will be used to develop written responses. Review rough drafts of the written prompt responses and provide feedback.

The Teachers’ Role Review a draft project plan and provide feedback. Assist students/teams with project management. Assign ‘check points’ to provide feedback and troubleshoot issues. Determine an evaluation panel and provide criteria and guidance ahead of time to evaluators. Manage the evaluation of the written, product/internship and presentation components. Others?
