Popular sports The British are proud of fact that many sports originated in their country and then spread throughout the world. The national British sports are • football • golf • cricket • table tennis • lawn tennis • racing • darts
National sport The national sport of the UK is football, but the UK does not compare as a nation in any major football tournament. Instead, there are four teams, English, Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish. There also many famous football club in the UK, such as Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal in England Rangers and Celtic in Scotland.
FOOTBALL Football is the most popular sport in England, and has been played for hundreds of years. In the English Football League there are 92 professional clubs. These are semi-professional, so most players have other full-time jobs. Hundreds of thousands of people also play football in parks and playgrounds just for fun. At its core, football is a game with two teams of eleven players, played over the course of 90 minutes. This period is split into two 45 -minute halves. The objective of the game is to score more ‘goals’ than the opposition. The term ‘goal’ refers to two areas either side of the pitch, each one defended by one of the teams. A ‘goal’ is scored by depositing the ball into the opponent’s area.
Rugby is a type of football. It is played with an oval ball and players can both kick or run with it. There are two types of rugby: in Rugby Union there are teams of 15 players, who are amateurs, and it is played by England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland (a joint team from both Northern Ireland the Republic of Ireland), France, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. There are regular matches between these countries. In Rugby League there are 13 players in a team, the players are all professionals and it is mostly played in the north of England Australia.
CRICKET Another traditional British game is cricket. Unlike football cricket is not widely spread outside the British Isles. Cricket is a summer game, it is played in schools, colleges, universities. Cricket is a very long and a very slow game. There are two teams. Each team consists of eleven men. The "bowler" throws the ball, and a "batsman" hits it with his bat.
Cricket’s history Cricket was first played in southern England in the 16 th century. By the end of the 18 th century, it had developed into the national sport of England. The expansion of the British Empire led to cricket being played overseas and by the mid-19 th century the first international matches were being held. The ICC, the game's governing body, has 10 full members. The game is most popular in Australasia, England, the Indian subcontinent, the West Indies and Southern Africa.
Tennis is also very popular in Britain. Two different games that do not have much in common bear the name of tennis - lawn tennis and table tennis. Both games first appeared in England, but today the British prefer lawn tennis to table tennis.
One player hits, or serves, the ball from a corner of a marked out area called a court that is divided down the middle with a three foot net. The opposite player’s goal is to return the ball bouncing it no more than once aiming for the other player to not be able to hit it. A score is made when a player is not able to return the ball at all or with more than one bounce.
P O L O Polo is a royal sport. What is polo? Basically, polo does not represent anything unusual. As well as in many other games, there are two teams which task is to hammer the greatest amount of balls between racks of a gate of the opponent. Unique makes game that circumstance that all players should be on horseback. Prince Charles plays polo with passion.
