So please excuse the handwriting Which may not be too clear. But this afternoon by the lion's cage I'm afraid I got too near. STANZAS l l Within a poem you will sometimes see stanzas. Stanzas give a poem fixed structure. Stanzas have an appearance like a paragraph, but they are not indented. Types of stanzas include: couplets, triplets and quatrains.

COUPLET A MINOR BIRD l l l A couplet is two lines of poetry grouped together. These two lines usually rhyme. Humor is often used in couplets. I’ve wished a bird would fly away, And not sing by my house all day: Have clapped my hands at him from the doo When it seemed as if I could bear no more. The fault must partly have been in me. The bird was not to blame for his key. And of course there must be something wrong In want to silence any song. Robert Frost

TRIPLET The Toucan l A triplet is a group of three lines. l The 3 lines within the stanza usually rhyme. Tell me who can Catch a toucan? Lou can. Just how few can Ride the toucan? Two can. QUATRAIN l Quatrains is a a four line stanza. l It has a variety of common patterns l EXAMPLES OF PATTERNS: ABBA AABB ABAB A B C G (most common) l l WILT CHAMBERLAIN Wilt was so built He could give it a tilt Over the rim Hardly higher than him.
