PMI’s Temporary Shelter Assistance through Community Empowerment

Aims Direct early recovery activities and ensure that every household losing their houses due the earthquakes receives support to be able to build their own temporary shelters using timber/coconut/bamboo frames and traditional cladding and roof to be able to start their economic activities before the rainy season.

Objective Move (as many as possible) people currently living in tents/tarps/sub-standard shelters to safe, secure, temporary shelters made from coconut /timber/bamboo built by the people themselves through mutual assistance ‘gotongroyong’

Method Direct funds transfers into the bank accounts of community groups to buy equipment and materials. Helping the most vulnerable people first in each (jorong/KAN/traditional groups -approximately 10 – 50 households HH who know each other) The people involved: – – – Community, financial team, Supervision by Jorong Head/Datuk PMI volunteers, including UBH students or other organizations PMI/PNS Banks (Bank Nagari/BRI? )

Beneficiary Priorities THE MOST VULNERABLE people in community: – – – – Elderly Ill Mothers with infants Mother expecting babies within 2 -3 months Poor Disabled Etc.

Positive Impacts • Earthquake survivors recover more quickly since they feel to be able to build their own shelters. • People are closer to one another since they work together in the spirit of ‘gotong-royong’ • Earthquake survivors feel more secure and comfortable since they no longer live in tents, but in ‘homes’. • They prefer to live in a house that they build together.
