1850’s ◦ ◦ Sweet Home Plantation – Kentucky Run by the Garner family They are relatively kind slave owners that allow their slaves to start families. They also allow their slaves to rent themselves out on Sundays and keep the money they earn. They allow their slaves to “Marry”, if not in a legal sense.
Sweet Home They own 5 male slaves: Paul A Paul D Paul F Sixo Halle They also own one older female slave: Baby Suggs, who is Halle’s mother.
124 Bluestone Road Halle saves up enough money to buy Baby Suggs’ freedom – he does not want his mother to spend the rest of her life as a slave. ◦ She moves to 124 Bluestone Road in Cincinnati. Since Baby Suggs is gone, Garner needs a slave to do the woman’s work, so he buys Sethe (“SETH -uh”) ◦ Sethe “marries” Halle ◦ They have three kids – two boys (Howard and Buglar), and a girl, still unnamed.
“Schoolteacher” Sethe is pregnant with a fourth when Mr. Garner dies and “Schoolteacher” takes over. ◦ He is much more cruel than Mr. Garner ◦ The slaves decide to attempt escape…
1855 The Underground Railroad helps the three children escape to Baby Suggs’ house in Cincinnati. ◦ Sethe and Halle make a plan to escape, but Halle does not arrive in the field for their appointed rendezvous. Sethe makes it to Baby Suggs’ house, and gives birth while crossing the river to a baby girl she names Denver (you’ll see why). For exactly 28 days they are together before Schoolteacher returns to claim his property. Sethe locks herself in the toolshed and tries to kill all of the kids, but succeeds in killing only one, the stillunnamed third child (a girl).
1856 -1865 ◦ ◦ ◦ Sethe is sentenced to jail for destruction of property – she gets to keep Denver with her. The boys stay in 124 with Baby Suggs Sethe gets out of jail, Baby Suggs dies. 124 is haunted by the murdered child who is never named. She gets a headstone carved with only one word on it: BELOVED
1873 Tired and afraid of the ghost, the boys run away from home leaving Sethe and Denver alone. One day a familiar looking man walks up the path at 124 Bluestone Road…. .
