Piers Plowright Born in London in 1937, Piers Plowright spent a lot of his childhood listening to the radio and going to the near-by Everyman Cinema, where he saw the classics of European, American and Asian cinema. After a spell teaching in Borneo, Iran, and the Sudan, he joined the BBC, working first for the overseas service and then moving to the Radio Drama Department where he discovered the power of the radio documentary and feature. Since 1977, he has been making radio programmes about real people and events, often making use of the techniques and structure of drama. He has also been much influenced by film and its use of sound. In 1996 he began to write detective stories. And in 2000 he wrote his famous detective story «The Smuggler» Piers has won two Italia Prizes and a RAI prize for his radio documentaries and a Gold Award for documentaries in the 1997 Sony Awards and ditto in 1998 for Services to Radio. He retired from the BBC in 1997 but continues to listen, look and lecture.

Plot John Samuel Fame crosses the frontier on a regular basis. He also has some friends who are suspected criminals. When a valuable gold statue is stolen from Darna museum, Inspector Roland immediately has him followed.

A note about the story When you drive from one country to another, you have to cross a frontier. Some people try to take things across frontiers without paying money. Such people called smugglers

Fame looked round the room. Fame noticed broken bottle on the floor near the door, which he hadn’t seen before. The bottle had broken into three pieces and the three pieces lay on the floor near the door. Someone had attacked Harker hadn’t hanged himself. Some men had been in the hut before Fame. They had fought with Harker, and then they had hanged him. Fame began to look through Harker’s pockets but they were empty. Someone had already gone through Harker’s pockets and taken everything. Fame looked round room again. Then he saw the bit of paper lying on the floor, near Harker’s desk. Fame picked it up. There was writing but he could not understand it. It was poem. So Harker had writing a poem. But why? Harker wasn’t a poet. He didn’t even read poetry. Harker was a clever man, a tough man, but he was interested in money, not in poetry. He read newspapers, he didn’t read poetry.

Fame was about to put poem in his pocket, when he saw what was written on the front: To John Samuel Fame- please read carefully. So it was message – a massage from him. Fame read the poem carefully but did not understand it. Just Fame was finishing writing the poem, he heard voices. Men’s voices. The men were coming towards the door.

Conclusion It was a very nice book. It was a sort of detective story and it was exciting too. The book wasn’t hard to read because there were a lot of illustrations and a easy font.

Why I chose this book because I really like detective stories such as «Sherlock Holmes» . And i found for myself that this book is got great plot and emotional characters.

Smugglers – people who try taking things across the frontiers without paying money. Gang – a group of people, like smugglers, who work together and do jobs that are not honest.
