The majority of industries worldwide still use hexavalent chrome based pretreatments largely because it is widely available, very versatile and relatively inexpensive. However, hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is classified as carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Other serious symptoms such as asthma attacks, stomach upsets and ulcers, convulsions, kidney and liver damage have also been reported with exposure to Cr(VI). This plating system is only possible to use over expensive plastics materials such as ABS and PC/ABS. The plating on plastics requires large installations and it is a high contaminant industry.
