“ Peter in Voronezh. The shipbuilding for the second Azov campaign" 2012 by Polezhaeva Alina, Interlingua Pavlovsk
This presentation is dedicated to Peter the Great and his shipbuilding in Voronezh. I chose this topic because I live in Voronezh region, in fact, in Pavlovsk. It is on the right bank of the River Don. Here Peter built the shipyard. I am proud that my town has such a great and important history.
"Peter and Voronezh" Peter the Great IS the first Emperor of Russia. Citizens of Voronezh are obliged to Peter the Great because he glorified the city. This is due to his visit of Voronezh. No wonder that the first monument in Voronezh was dedicated to Peter I. The great ship building was developed here.
“The first failure and solutions” Peter the Great, the famous Russian tsar-reformer. He paid much attention to the fight of Russia for the free access towards the sea in the south. But the siege of the Azov fortress and the assault were not successful and led to large losses. A full blockade of the Azov was impossible without the Russian fleet. Peter knew that the main reason for the failure is the absence of a strong navy. The siege of the Azov was ended. The Tsar decided to repeat the trip from Voronezh to the fortress in the mouth of the River Don next spring. But why did Peter choose Voronezh as a base for the fleet?
"The 4 reasons" Voronezh was selected as a base for the fleet for several reasons: - First, the city was situated on the river Voronezh. The river flows into the River Don. This opened up the straight road to the Azov Sea. - Secondly, the woods were growing near the city, which came as a building material for ships; - Thirdly, there was Lipetsk iron ore near here; - Fourth, the local people have sufficient experience in construction of river vessels.
"The Workers " In February 1696, Peter the Great arrived in Voronezh to lead the construction of warships. By Peter’s order about 27, 000 peasants from the villages and towns were sent here for the construction of the vessels. There were a lot of skilled shipbuilders, who had an experience in shipbuilding.
"The unusual test" The construction of the ships were in the Voronezh shipyard. The chief was a governor named Aleksei Shein. But in fact, all the direction was provided by Peter. In 1699 there was an unusual test. Peter I examined personally the young Russian noblemen who came from abroad. There they learned to build and drive the ships. The exam was rigorous. Peter I demanded not only theoretical knowledge, but he watched the nobles could manage to drive the ships. Most of them could not cope with the task. Only 4 people from 72 passed the exam.
"The results and success of Peter the Great" 540 boats and 130 seagoing rafts were built in Voronezh. Some of the first and famous ships were the galleys called "Principium", "St. Peter" and "St. Pavel", "Goto Predestinatsia" and others. The Azov fleet was created in a few months. It was based on two-masted sailing galleys with several guns and a crew of up to 250 people. Peter the Great’s result was rapid ship construction in the city, which was the first in the history of the Russian State Navy, with the help of which Russia managed to possess the Turkish fortress of the Azov and get an access to the Azov Sea.
