Pepsi. Co, Inc. was established through the merger of Pepsi-Cola and Frito -Lay. Pepsi-Cola was created in the late 1890 s by Caleb Bradham, a New Bern, N. C. pharmacist. Frito-Lay, Inc. was formed by the 1961 merger of the Frito Company, founded by Elmer Doolin in 1932, and the H. W. Lay Company, founded by Herman W. Lay, also in 1932. Herman Lay, former chairman and CEO of Frito-Lay, was chairman of the board of directors of the new company; Donald M. Kendall, former president and CEO of Pepsi-Cola, was president and chief executive officer. The new company reports sales of $510 million and has 19, 000 employees. Major products of the new companies are: Pepsi-Cola Company: Pepsi-Cola (formulated in 1898), Diet Pepsi (1964) and Mountain Dew (introduced by Tip Corporation in 1948). Frito-Lay, Inc. : Fritos brand corn chips (created by Elmer Doolin in 1932), Lay's brand potato chips (created by Herman W. Lay in 1938), Cheetos brand cheese flavored snacks (1948), Ruffles brand potato chips (1958) and Rold Gold brand pretzels (acquired 1961)
FACTS Pepsi-Cola becomes the first American consumer product to be produced, marketed and sold in the former Soviet Union. Pepsi is the first company to respond to consumer preference with lightweight, recyclable, plastic bottles, and introduces the industry's first two-liter bottle.
1973 For the first time, Pepsi-Cola becomes the number one cola drink in supermarkets. Foods International, later called Pepsi. Co Foods International (PFI) and subsequently named Frito-Lay International, is established to market snack foods around the world.
1982 Pepsi-Cola makes advertising history as Michael Jackson and his brothers usher in a new generation of Pepsi advertising in two of the most eagerly awaited television commercials featuring music marketing. Pepsi becomes "The Choice of a New Generation. "
1985 Pepsi. Co is now the largest company in the beverage industry and its products are available in nearly 150 countries and territories. Pepsi distributes products in China.
1989 Pepsi. Co acquires Walkers Crisps and Smith Crisps, two of the United Kingdom's leading snack food companies. Pepsi. Co enters the top 25 of the Fortune 500 ranking.
1993 After a 27 -year absence, Pepsi returns to Broadway with the lighting of a spectacular new neon sign in Times Square. Pepsi-Cola introduces freshness dating.
1994 Pepsi-Cola is the first major soft drink maker to begin producing and distributing its product in Vietnam. Pepsi. Co and Starbucks form the North American Coffee Partnership to jointly develop ready-to-drink coffee beverages.
1995 Pepsi. Co spins off Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell as Tricon Global Restaurants, Inc. Pepsi. Co will introduce Lay's brand potato chips in 20 markets throughout the world.
1996 Filming of the world's first commercial in space, Cosmonauts shoot a large blue Pepsi can in orbit outside the MIR space station.
2005 Pepsi. Co celebrates its 40 th anniversary. 2004 Pepsi. Co publishes its first Corporate Citizenship report in the 2003 Annual Report.
2007 Pepsi. Co introduces Performance with Purpose, making it one of the first contemporary companies to recognize the important interdependence between corporations and society.
2009 Pepsi. Co announces plans to invest US $1 billion in China over the next four years as part of the strategy to expand in emerging markets and broaden the portfolio of locally relevant products.
Pepsi-Cola introduces a new, modern looking logo, still featuring the red, white, and blue color scheme adopted in 1950.
